Osceola youths earn state honors in education and sports

Dan Bond was Osceola’s 1976 Boys Stater and elected mayor of Midway after standing out among larger schools. Bernardine Nitsch, a top track competitor, won the 880 yard run at the district AAU Junior Olympics and eyes a regional in July. The community notes safety week, local construction on Kimmel Street, home remodeling, and a pump planter in Charles Kucera’s yard.

Peggy Watts Honored Queen of Bethel 61 Job’s Daughters

Peggy Watts was installed as Honored Queen of Bethel 61 International Order of Job’s Daughters at a two o'clock ceremony in the lodge hall. She is a high school senior. Elected officers installed include Ann Thornton senior princess Pam Bryan junior princess Janet Wieseman guide and Debbie Bryan marshal. Retiring Queen Denise Snodgrass officiated with assistance from Mary Jo Wieseman and others. International Miss Job Lori Coffin attended as guest. Appointed officers for the new term include Susan Watts outer guard Vicki Thornton inner guard and Lisa Davis fourth and fifth messenger.

Scouts Advance Rank At Court Of Honor

Boy Scout Troop 162 held a Court of Honor in the Scout cabin Sunday evening with Scoutmaster Norman Hofbauer presiding. Families attended as the Wolf Patrol opened the meeting and merit and skill awards earned this spring were presented.

Osceola Hosts Pony Express Relay Station Event

The Pony Express 76 relay begins June 22 from Mount Vernon Washington with 302 stations over 3014 miles ending July 4 in Pennsylvania. Osceola hosts a relay stop between 5 00 a m and 6 30 a m with 50 participants and coverage by AP Radio.

Cengas Pays Nebraska Franchise Tax to Osceola

Cengas delivered a check for 3482.43 to the Osceola City Treasurer for the 12 months ending April 30, 1976. Franchise taxes in 57 Nebraska communities served by Cengas totaled nearly 750000 dollars. Manager Chris Dahmke noted taxes are based on total Cengas billings in each community. Cengas also paid 699853 dollars in 1975 property and real estate taxes in Nebraska.

Annual Golf Tourney Draws 144 Players at Ryan Hill

The seventh annual Men's Invitational Golf Tourney at Ryan Hill Country Club drew a record 144 golfers from 23 towns. Medalist Bill Peterson of Dannebrog shot 30 on the first nine, and six flight winners were named with multiple players from David City, Osceola, and surrounding communities.

Osceola Midgets Win First Little Eight Game 11-4

Osceola Midgets defeat Benedict 11-4 in the Little Eight League opener. Osceola built a 2-0 lead, broke through with four runs in the fifth, added three in the sixth and two in the seventh. Benedict scored in the sixth and seventh. Osceola had eight hits and five errors. Benedict had seven errors. Battery for Osceola was Lyndon Wieseman, Jerome Zelasney and Neal Roehrs.

Osceola Students Shine At AAU Meets In Fremont and Hastings

Four Osceola High School athletes Bonnie Bernardine Nitsch Lyndon Wieseman Tim Johansen and mentor Pete Chapman competed at the AAU Junior Olympic Track Meet in Fremont on May 29. Bernardine took second in the 880 and 220 and later won the 880 at Hastings setting an intermediate record before advancing to the July regional in St Paul Minnesota. Bernardine also placed third in the mile while Lyndon earned a discus fifth with 114710 feet.
