Taps Sounded For Mike Hoffer

One of the county s few surviving Civil War veterans Uncle Mike Hoffer died at his Osceola home at 94 years. He served in Maryland units from 1861 to 1864 and later lived in Nebraska before settling in Osceola. Survived by three daughters two sons sixteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Funeral at First Methodist Church Osceola with military escort and American Legion grave rites.

Polk County Picnic Reunites Old Neighbors at Sidney

Former Polk County residents gathered at Legion Park Sidney Nebr for a picnic with host families from Gurley Dix Crook Lodgepole Chapell and Osceola A business meeting elected Mrs L A Pearson Lodgepole president and Emil A Johnson secretary setting aside the third Sunday in June as the permanent date for annual gatherings A large turnout shared a basket dinner ice cream and cake and many plans to maintain an organization were discussed.

Local residents shared visits from Friday through Sunday including Mrs. Lee Ruff, Mrs. Goldsmith, Miss Alice Tennant, and families connected to the Maxcey and Bryan households. A telegram from the Washington Extension Service director announces that fodder corn and grain sorghums may be planted on noncontracted acreage while certain sorghum types remain restricted on contracted lands. Sudan grass millets oats and sweet sorghum cane may be fed on contracted acres. any excess should not be sold.
