Hail Storm Wrecks Crops in Polk County Area
A severe hail storm Tuesday night through Wednesday morning damaged crops across a Polk to Durant corridor, with parts of the four mile wide strip showing near total loss. Small grain lies flattened. wires were down and local rainfall ranged from 1 1/4 to 5 inches as the Platte and nearby creeks rose. County officials report significant damage in the hardest hit locality.

Man and Wife Die In U P Train Collision Near Clarks
Mr and Mrs C C Kaley of Sutherland Nebraska were killed at a road crossing on the main line of the Union Pacific near Clarks Tuesday afternoon. The couple had visited family in Osceola and Stromsburg before departing. The fast train did not stop at Clarks and wreckage described as severe left Kaley’s car demolished. The bodies were returned to Clarks.

Obituary for Mrs. Wilhelmina Zang of Osceola and Kewanee
Wilhelmina Furst Zang was born July 8 1844 near Benin Germany and died June 7 1924 at nearly 80. She moved to Kewanee Illinois in 1869 with her family and married Nicholas Zang in 1862 at Cambridge Illinois. Surviving children include Caroline Schrlette Emma Nickell Louise Schwab Augustus Albert Henry Edward and Sybilla with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her husband died January 3 1899 and she later moved to Osceola where she remained active managing home and farm duties until shortly before her death. She was a self taught reader of literature and followed Lutheran faith.

Cecil Curtiss Mustard born June 9 1889 in Polk County Nebraska died after long illness at age 33 years 11 months 24 days. He married Louisa Walker February 20 1917 and farmed near Silver Creek and Clark Nebraska. Survived by wife parents Oscar and wife, and four brothers Clyde Earl Glen Donald. Funeral at Silver Creek M E church with burial in Silver Creek cemetery.

The obituary notes that she was the eldest of six siblings with two brothers Hiram and Lincoln Ingalls of Alton Ohio and many relatives. A Methdist Episcopal church member from Rising City and Shelby, funeral services were held at her son Charles DeTurk’s home on May 31 conducted by Rev. C E Ruch, with interment in Rising City cemetery.

A large Polk County group attended the Lincoln Lincoln Nebraska Boys and Girls Club Week with 250 members in Lincoln and about 100 joining in Omaha Friday. County Agent Adair organized the events with local banks and businesses funding prizes. Stumpffs Plead Guilty In Nebraska Liquor Conspiracy Case
The case involving seven defendants including Mr and Mrs Wm Stumpff their son Edward and others from Carlis Nebr and Lincoln was disposed of last Monday in federal court Judge Munger deferred sentences for all except Frank Tague who pleaded guilty two weeks ago Tague was shot by an officer during arrests of Tague Kirby and Dahlgren while allegedly transporting liquor into Lincoln.

The adjusted compensation act pays World War veterans and dependents of deceased veterans basic amounts: one dollar per day for home service and 1.25 dollars per day for overseas service, with a maximum of 500 for overseas only and 625 for both home and overseas. Cash payments go to those with up to 50 dollars. dependents of deceased veterans up to 30 dollars. Higher compensations are not cash. the credit is turned to the Veterans Bureau director to buy a 20 year endowment paid up life policy, increased by 25 percent, with proceeds at 20 years or on death. The policy may be borrowed against after two years. Plans are under way to host horse shoe games in Osceola this summer at the rear of Hanson Style Shop. Groundwork and sand boxes have been prepared and electric lights will let the boys play at night. Attendance at Friday’s courthouse meeting was light, but the effort is moving forward. Polk county players may join, and Gresham teams are expected to challenge. Further announcements will follow.
