Open installation follows at 8 pm Bethel 39 handles installing Bethel U D 61. New officers listed with guardians and council members. reception held afterward under Mildred Mouden supervision.

Director John Adams calls bandsmen to report at the school auditorium Friday night June 12 for rehearsal. The group aims for a June 20 public concert at the Osceola courthouse. Admission is open to all who wish to join the summer concert series. rehearsal begins at 8:00 p.m.
Mr and Mrs Glenn Willits mark their 60th wedding anniversary dating from their Osceola marriage on June 8 1893. They host an open house at their Clark home on June 14 from 1 to 5 pm inviting friends with no gifts requested.

The Osceola swimming pool opens Friday June 12 after extensive remodeling. A new chlorinator was added to keep water safe, the diving tower was strengthened, and the building was repainted and cleaned. Red Cross will offer free swimming lessons this season. Admission prices and rules remain unchanged.
Religious Vacation School for grade school children at St Vincent Church concluded with a solemn first holy communion at 7 30 mass. Children including Joey Anderson Alberta Cerny Bob Gabriel Norman Lux Larry Meister Paul McKeag Jerry Urban Avis Waller Gary Waller and Larry Waller renewed baptismal vows. A similar rite occurred at St Andrew Church at nine o clock mass with Kathleen Kresha making her first solemn holy communion.
Funeral services were held at Repner Funeral Home for Mrs Daisy Zang who died Sunday evening June 7 at the Social Center Rest Home. Interment followed in Osceola cemetery.
The Farmers Co op Oil Association of Polk County plans a caravan of cars to Phillipsburg Kansas on June 18 to witness the dedication of a newly upgraded refinery. The plant, started in the late 1930s, now features a catalytic cracking unit and represents about three and a half million dollars in investment.
An estimated crowd of 10 000 is expected for the dedication of the world s first complete oil refinery in Phillipsburg Kansas on June 18. McDill Boyd editor of the Review at Phillipsburg and former boss will give the welcoming address.
The world’s complete co op refinery will host a day long dedication with forenoon tours and a noon parade from the high school to the Rodeo grounds for a 10 000 person barbeque. Kansas Nebraska Colorado co op managers and the Chamber of Commerce organized the events with welcome by McDill Boyd.
The Osceola band series will begin Saturday night June 20 on the court house south steps at 8:00 p.m. The group is formed mainly from school band members and those who wish to join, with sponsorship from the school city and Osceola Chamber of Commerce. Farmers on land with no wheat planted in 1915 1952 or 1953 may apply for a 1954 acreage allotment. Applications must be written to the county PMA committee by June 30 1953. Blank forms are available at the county PMA office.
Mrs Thelma Allinder won first for Nothland Tales in the Bragi pattern contest at the Nebraska Ars Poetica convention in Grand Island last Sunday. She also took second for The Geese Fly North and third for poems judged outstanding, plus fourth for her anniversary poem Pure Seed. All four prizes were cash.
The Departments of Agriculture and Health Education and Welfare announce a temporary pause in Phase II of the grain sanitation program to allow farmers and warehouses to ready storage. Stored grain insects and rodents cause estimated $8,000,000 losses yearly. 151 elevator samples and surveys have been collected with June completion, and one third of Nebraska elevators will be surveyed. Mr and Mrs Henry Strickland and daughters from Lincoln visited the Heitzman family Sunday and stayed for a week.
Word from Dugdale Construction Company states crews will arrive in Osceola next week to patch holes in streets before leveling and applying the final armor coat. The firm has been doing similar work at Wahoo Nebraska.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Hazelwood of Denver visited Osceola over Memorial Day from their hardware business era. They decorated 30 graves, toured the town’s store buildings now housing Anderson Mercantile and Martha’s Coffee Shop, and collected Polk County dirt for their garden on the return to Colorado.
A deadly tornado struck eastern Nebraska late Sunday, with Arcadia in Valley County worst hit. Ten people died at a single home during a family reunion. Damage concentrated west of Polk County, with Rising City and surrounding areas heavily damaged and farms like the Grubaugh residence impacted. The storm left widespread structural and agricultural destruction, though most injuries were avoided. Officials noted the event began around 5 40 p m and lasted only minutes.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 9 a m in Central City and 2 p m in Belden for George W. Locke 77 who died Saturday. He lived in Belden Osceola Lincoln and Alliance. survived by wife Mary two sons Dr M M and E A three brothers and four grandchildren.
