Nebraska Game Commission posted no fishing signs around David City park lake after stocking about 500 bullheads on Monday night May 25. The lake will be out of bounds for seven days and the signs urge good sportsmanship and adherence to rules.
May weather in Polk County was cool and wet, recording 2.50 inches of rain. Observations list freezing or below readings on the 2nd 12th and 13th with 32 31 and 31 degrees. Harold Klingman Osceola logged a maximum of 88 on the 24th. The month’s daily temperatures are charted.
A Polk County picnic is planned at Roosevelt Park in Los Angeles California on June 21 1953. Attendees should go to 1700 block East Florence Avenue and proceed a half block south along the Pacific Electric Railroad tracks. Bring lunch coffee will be served.
The American Legion schedules practice for the Junior and Midget teams. Midget practice is Saturday at 1 30 p m with Junior practice Sunday at 1 30 p m at the baseball field. Teams are under Legion oversight and are led by new Osceola school coach Robert Manley. All area boys are invited to join, says Sheldon Bond.
The Odd Fellows and Rebekah Lodges of Osceola announce a joint memorial on Wednesday evening June 10 at 8 30 in the IOOF Hall. Members and their families are invited to attend.
William McGaffin, a Polk county native and Lincoln Journal Foreign News Service correspondent in England, attended the Queen's coronation as a invited newsman. His Polk Progress roots and Stromsburg connections are noted, with a planned US return to visit the county this summer.
Rear Admiral Daniel Gallery and Brigadier General Frank Lamson-Scribner will lead the Annual Military Inspection at Lincoln Naval Air Station on June 5. Vice Admiral John Dale Price will attend the reception. Over a thousand personnel from Nebraska, South Dakota, and Western Iowa participate. Governor Crosby and Chancellor Gustavson speak. 702nd Air Force Band performs. Public invited. seating arranged for civilians.
Any person in the military service of the United States stationed in Nebraska may hunt and fish on a residence license. At purchase, proof must show military status and Nebraska station.
Mr and Mrs David Timm and Mr and Mrs Ivan Hastings with Nancy and Mrs Fern Henry of Moline Illinois arrived last Thursday for a week long visit with Mrs Philip Waller and family, the farmers daughter.
A capacity crowd attended the OHS Alumni Banquet in the school auditorium on Friday night May 29. Attendees included honored classes from 1903 to the 1953 class represented by Milton Marak. John Inness served as toast master as W. H. Norton led the proceedings and the officers for the coming year were announced. Music from a girls sextette and Bill Zedicher complemented the evening followed by a dance with Johnny Cox and his orchestra. The St Vincent Church Altar Society provided the banquet meal.

The Osceola Hotel was sold Monday to Mr and Mrs Roy Steele formerly of Arcadia Nebraska. The Steeles assume management immediately and plan a complete renovation including decorating the building and installing new room equipment. They have run a small hotel in Arcadia for the past five years.
Polk County commissioners heard a delegation seeking a special election to vote on a county hospital near the county seat. A petition with names including W R Kepner and Dr H F Daum asked for a county-wide election to authorize a $150 000 bond issue at no more than 3 percent interest over twenty years. The panel took the proposal under advisement and will report at the next meeting.
Mr and Mrs O F Branting marked sixty years of marriage with a Sunday home celebration for twenty five guests. The Associated Women of Farm Bureau launch a slogan contest on Highway Clean Up or Highway Safety. Submit a slogan of 20 words or fewer to your area unit chairman by July 10. Five local unit prizes and three county prizes to be awarded.
The Cub Scouts held their regular Pack meeting May 26 at the Methodist Church with the theme Mother Nature's Back Yard. Joe Roberts joined the Pack as a member. Wayne Bonne earned a Wolf badge and Gary Rodene a silver arrow.
A Polk farm woman, Mrs. Ben Peterson, 51, was killed Monday when her car left Highway 66 eight miles west of Polk and overturned in a ditch. The accident, likely caused by a rear tire blowout, left her alone in the vehicle. Survivors include her husband and siblings Mrs. Orley Miller of Polk, Mervin Samuels of Polk, and Kenneth Samuels of Chappell.
The Lindblade reunion gathered 63 relatives at Buckley Park in Stroms burg on May 31 with a picnic and later lunch. Distances ranged from Omaha to Lincoln with attendees including Harry Lindblade and Floyd Parker families and many locals. A planning committee of Mrs Ralph Simpson Mrs Clarence Johnson and Mrs Lamont Sunderman was chosen for next year.
Mary Anderson of Osceola is among 316 outstanding high school students selected for the University of Nebraska All-State Fine Arts Course to be held June 11 to July 1. Director David Foltz announced intensive training in music art or speech with dormitory housing and meals at the student union. Music students may join the All-State Chorus Band and Orchestra and small ensembles. Speech students will stage plays learn radio techniques and debate and interpretive reading. Art students use the university studio for drawing painting and sculpture.
Mrs Viola E Wieseman announces the engagement of her daughter Helen to Dr W J Suchy son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Suchy of Chicago Miss Wieseman trained as a nurse in Omaha and works in Lincoln Dr Suchy a Dartmouth Tufts graduate with Marquette Medical degree and Alpha Kappa Gamma member recently finished Navy aviation medicine school He is a flight surgeon stationed at Lincoln Neb September wedding planned
A chapter of the International Order of Jobs Daughters will be organized Thursday June 4 at Odd Fellows Hall. Initiation at 2 p m and installation at 8 p m with star members and Masons invited to attend. The Columbus Bethel will initiate and install and several recurs of their choir will attend.
The Post Office Department announces box rents at Osceola post office will rise July 1 1953 under a new schedule. No 1 boxes 90 cents per quarter No 2 boxes 1.10 per quarter No 3 boxes 1.50 per quarter. The changes reflect higher costs for equipment and service, with no prior approval needed.
In honor of their 25th wedding anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Johnson hosted an open house from 2 to 5 p m at their Sun day home on May 31. More than 175 relatives and friends attended to extend congratulations as ice cream cake mints and coffee were served on a lace table with roses and silver candles. Mrs Gunnard Peterson poured and family members managed the guest book gifts and cards. Clayton Lucas and Ronnie joined Saturday visits in Madison with the Besseys and Bunik households.
Robert Manley appointed as manager and coach for the Ameri can Legion baseball teams at Osceola. A former Illinois athlete, he attended the University of Illinois and Elmhurst College, earned all state honors in high school basketball, and played multiple sports in college. He has pro baseball experience and has coached in Belleville Kansas McCook Nebraska and Osceola area, with current play in the Pioneer League and Nebraska Independent League. Practice for Midgets is Saturday and for the Junior team Sunday. interested boys should contact him.
A miscellaneous shower for Miss Jeanene Gentry was held May 27 at the Christian Church parlors in Beaver Crossing. Guests played games, made a scrapbook, and the bride to be opened gifts while seated in a pink and white decorated chair. Fifty attendees were served lunch by church ladies. Mrs. Tressie Brown attended. Gentry and Bob Brown of Osceola are to wed June 8.
NBBC meets Friday evening with Mrs. R. M. McDonald. Tuesday hosts St. Andrew Holy Name Society at 8 p m in the parish hall. Wednesday features St. Vincent Altar Society at 2 p m in the parish hall. Thursday schedules St. Andrew Altar Society at 2 p m in the parish hall.
OHS alumni association praised for staging the annual banquet and St. Vincent church Altar Society commended for timely food service.
