Farmers Union urges registration for beef referendum

Local Farmers Union officials urge all area farmers to register at the ASCS office between noon June 6 and Friday June 17 in preparation for the national beef referendum held July 5 to July 15. They emphasize neutrality and confidence Nebraska farmers will vote their own decision.

Osceola Council Sets Special Election on Repeal Petitions

At the June 2 meeting Osceola City Council, Councilman Ron Christensen moved to repeal ordinances 342 and 343 on garbage collection and disposal but failed to gain a second. A special election will be held on the petition signed by registered voters. The council also issued a building permit to W. F. Monson and sold city lot to Bill Johansen. It adopted a 35 mph speed limit on Highway 81/92 through town and authorized grant applications for the sewer lagoon project with EPA and DEC funds. The meeting concluded after bills and warrants were approved.

High Prairie Alumni Celebrate 50th Graduation Anniversary

Alumni banquet in York marked the fiftieth anniversary of High Prairie’s first graduating class. The event honored graduates from 1927 to 1944, with Wes­ley Fredrickson as host and a committee including Opal Fredrickson Peterson and Maxine Hanquist. The High Prairie school operated 1874 to 1944 in Polk County, with blue and gold colors and strong baseball tradition.

New Osceola Pastor Reimers Joins St. Paul Lutheran

The St. Paul Lutheran Church in Osceola welcomes Pastor Paul Reimers and his family Glennyce Philip Julie and Mark. Reimers previously served as campus pastor at Wayne State College in Wayne and on a church in Winside for eight years. He studied in Illinois and two years Tanzania missionary teaching African girls near Mt Kilimanjaro. The family shares interests in music and gardening. Mrs Reimers plays and tunes a harpsichord built from a kit by her carpenter father. Philip, age nine, was active in Cub Scouts in Wayne.

Ryan Hill Tourney Draws 144 Golfers In Eight Annual Invite

The eighth annual Ryan Hill Men's Invitational Golf Tournament drew 144 players from 19 communities. Dennis Quick of Beatrice was medalist with 31 on the front nine and 64 to win the Championship flight. Winners across seven flights included Gene Zeilinger and Ken Keller in the President's flight and multiple players from David City, Osceola and Fullerton with top finishes in various flights and prize categories.

Osceola Midgets Open 1977 Season With Defeat

The Osceola Midgets lost 5-3 at home to Rising City on May 26 after leading 2-1 in the fifth. Rising City surged ahead with two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh as Osceola failed to score enough in the final frame.

Osceola sees above normal rainfall in May

May brought 5.92 inches of rain in Osceola, above the 3.84 inch normal. The year totals 14.69 inches, with May 21 yielding the peak 1.77 inches. Temperature stayed mild with highs mostly in the 70s and 80s, 88 on the 16th and 47 on the 5th. Extremes last May were 90 and 25.

The Nebraska State Fair announces an nine night entertainment lineup in the new Sports and Entertainment Complex.
