Clarke-McNary Tree Program Flourishes in Nebraska

Extension forester Neal Jennings of the University of Nebraska Lincoln reports the Clarke-McNary tree distribution program has delivered over 2.6 million seedlings in Nebraska this year, beating the 1976 record by nearly 400,000. Seedlings support windbreaks livestock protection woodlots wildlife plantings and Christmas tree use nationwide since 1926.

Bartu Named District Judge in Fifth Judicial District

Gov. J. James Exon named Bryce Bartu a 41 year old Seward attorney to fill the vacancy created by retirement of Howard Kanouff of Wahoo. Bartu, a University of Nebraska Law School graduate admitted in 1968, is a Comstock native with three children and wife Phyllis.

Cengas Pays City Gas Franchise Tax In 1977

Cengas delivered a check for 4306.93 to Osceola city treasurer for the natural gas franchise tax for the year ending April 30 1977. The tax across 57 Nebraska communities served by Cengas totaled about 745000 dollars. Cengas manager Chris Dahmke said taxes are based on total Cengas billings in each community. Cengas also paid over 700000 dollars in personal property and real estate taxes in Nebraska in 1976.

4 H Teens Plan Retreat in District V

4 H teens in District V plan a two day retreat June 17 and 18 at the 4 H Center near Gretna. Registrations are due by Wednesday, June 8 at the Polk County Extension Office. The program includes job panels, alcohol use discussion, fitness talk by University of Nebraska football, Star Hike, and games such as egg race and wheelbarrow.

Sophomores Qualify for State Meet at Junior Olympics

Eight Osceola students competed in Fremont on May 28. Bernie Nitsch and Lyndon Wieseman, both sophomores, earned state meet spots in the half mile and shot put at Hastings on June 18. Wieseman also took third in triple jump and fifth in long jump. Other sophomores Tami Hofbauer Bev Schott Kris Monson Bonnie Nitsch ran the 440 relay. Bonnie sat out the dash while Tim Johansen did the 100 and Greg Wieseman finished fourth in the 440.

OHS Alumni Return for Thirtieth Reunion Banquet

About 425 Osceola High School alumni and guests attended the 30th consecutive alumni banquet in downtown Osceola. The program featured honorees from classes 1917 to 1967, with remarks by class representatives and greetings from long-time supporters. Officers for 1978 were elected as part of weekend activities, followed by tours of the junior-senior high building and further reunions for the classes of 1927 and 1937.

Farmers Must Report Acreages for 1977 Crops in Nebraska

Nebraska ASCS reports require operators to file acreage of wheat corn grain sorghum and barley on all farms. Senate and House farm bills contemplate set aside options for 1978 crops based on 1977 planted acreages, but not for allotment calculations. Spring reports due after planting before Sept 1 1977 and fall reports before harvest. County ASCS offices to issue detailed reporting instructions.

Osceola Beats York 8-1 In Columbus Prep

Osceola traveled to Garland on Wednesday the 25th and won 8 to 1 after a 15 hit team effort. Bob Parminter homered in the third, Radcliff hit York's solo shot in the first, Osceola improves to 2-4 and heads to Columbus for a Wednesday night game on June 1.
