The board announced a favorable Attorney General opinion on the legality of a commercial course and discussed opening the fall term September 1. They plan a stage in the high school auditorium and contract nearly all faculty, with minor repairs slated before September 1.
Osceola announces a revised train timetable affecting all services except the morning passenger run. The shifts follow the launch of a new Omaha to Kansas City train operating from Valley to Valpariso and Lincoln with new eastbound and westbound departures and an afternoon westbound passenger at 5 28 p m.
Tonight the Auditorium hosts the Noble Outcast a lively mix of humor and philosophy for a Polk County Fair benefit. For 50 cents viewers receive a stemwinder show and contribute to grounds improvements featuring a cast including Colonel Lee Mrs. Lee Frances Lee James Blackburn Jack Worthington Sadie Vance Jerry and more.
Mr and Mrs Homer Hartson announced their marriage after a Lake Ericson honeymoon. They returned Sunday and kept the romance a secret. A surprise reception hosted by W E Snider honored the new son-in-law with relatives from the Hartson families in attendance.
June 17 schedule lists a morning concert by Stromsburg band with welcomes by A C Morrill and J C McClure, vocal by Stromsburg Quartet, dinners, Osceola Band concert, Odette of Osceola vocal, Lincoln speaker Chas Stewart, Swede Home Serxiette music, and sports with prizes. Ball game Shelby vs Polk at 3 30. Full details promised next week.
Decoration Day in Polk County featured speeches and ceremonies in Osceola with Judge H D Landis addressing about 45 minutes. The event included veterans groups, Boy Scouts, a wreathing of graves, firing squad, taps, and a procession to the cemetery with band music and prayers.
Veterans of Civil War Spanish American War World War and home guards lie in Osceola cemetery with a decorated roll of names. The list includes Geo Lybarger J H Anderson B E Martin J C Baker J H Mickey J P Beal S L Miller Theo Beebe AM Mills L A Beltzer J B Mitchell and many more along with World War Hilderbrand Wolfe Hills Kennard Kinney Klassy Leatherberry Kinney Klassy and Home Guards members Wm Fentress P E Simonson Gilbert Roslund and J D Houdersheldt among others noted in the Decoration Day tribute.
Former Bishop Homer C Stunts died early Tuesday at Methodist hospital in Omaha after paralysis suffered in Florida in February. He led the area from 1916 until retirement a month ago and conducted church dedications in Stromsburg two years ago, with wide recognition among church workers across a large territory.
Polk County Fair leaders announced two dates for the event Children’s Day Sept 10 and Homecoming Day Sept 11 opening the racing program. Beebe and collaborators urge former residents to visit the fair this fall as racing and exhibits are planned to attract broad participation.
Correspondence details visits to Grand Island and Omaha by residents, repairs at the Marigold Service Station, furniture making by Funkhouser and Dickhute, and a walnut library table under construction. Columbus defeats Shelby 2 to 1. David City to play Shelby, then Columbus hosts a return. Osceola High School hosts the Alumni Banquet with 130 members attending from near and far. H. H. Campbell and O. E. Mickey of class of 1888 attended, while Mrs. Lee Jones from California and the Mills family from Omaha led a notable out-of-town delegation. The event featured a prime menu, toasts by O. E. Mickey and Walter Berck, and the election of new officers Arthur B. Mickey president George Inness vice president Glenna Matheson secretary J. L. Heald treasurer.
F. M. Higgins, Farm Bureau director, spoke at a Polk County Farm Bureau meeting in Osceola. He warned farmers that farming as a business faces serious problems and urged timely action to prevent American agriculture from going “on the rocks.”
The Osceola town Decoration Day display featured uniform flags as a new element praised by the American Legion. H. C. Duncan led efforts to promote the idea with business support from many local firms and banks.
The Gabalot Club of Osceola Nebraska donates 25 dollars to the American Legion building fund for the G A R Hall remodel. William Wolfe Post 91 extends unanimous thanks to the ladies of the Gabalot Club. Approved June 2 1924 by Com. Leon Merrick.
Cecil Mustard, a farmer five miles north of Clarks, shot himself around 8:00 am Tuesday, after years of ill health and despondency. He left a note on despondency linked to poor health. his funeral plans were to be announced, with date likely Saturday or Sunday after relatives arrive.
Polk editor McGaffin and G W Mitchell return to Lincoln for federal petit jury duty. C O Eckles and Miss Mary Lois Ford wed in Lincoln this week and plan a Polk homecoming after a west honeymoon. Arnold Beckman and daughters visit Osceola officials. 8th grade exercises held there. Harry Meredith visits mother. Chas Graves shows health gains.
Graduation exercises for Polk County eighth graders were held at Osceola Auditorium on Tuesday afternoon. The 1924 class totals 190 with parents and friends present. The program included an invocation a piano duet a vocal solo an address a diploma presentation and songs including America.
The Minnetoska Camp Fire club met Monday evening to discuss camp plans. Girls intended to visit Camp Sheldon at Columbus for girls week but conflict with Chau tduqua week forces them to stay at Camp Kiwanis near Milford Nebraska where they have camped before. A bake sale is planned for Hansen Frahm meat market Saturday afternoon.
The Fourth of July committee plans two big baseball attractions. Shelby and Ulysses will meet to decide bragging rights in a likely packed hot contest. Osceola Woodmen face an outside Woodmen club, plus talk of a twilight league pitting east and west sides on state street with two evening games weekly.
The Community Club requests June 6 for a city park cleanup with the park board mowing by Morse mower. Citizens are urged to attend Friday afternoon and evening with lawn tools to improve the park. D W McFadden secretary.
Tuesday morning activity broke out on the C. A. Olson block as a large roof renewal began. The entire roof will be renewed, creating a sizable job. J. Jackson, Albert Timm, and W Silverstrand are carrying out the work.
