O C Eikenhorst announced Osceola Irrigation Service will occupy a new location this week. The business, two years old, moves from the Monson Building corner to the former Irvin Noble building south of the ASC Building. Patrons may inspect the new quarters any time. It offers the county’s only exclusive irrigation service.
Nellie Blanche Taddiken born near Shelby Nebraska December 31 1894 died May 22 1953 aged 60 years four months and 22 days. She married Robert C. Taddiken January 14 1913 and they lived near Shelby later moving to Shelby in 1946. She is survived by four children seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren two sisters and several brothers. Services were held at Wesley Methodist Church Shelby with Rev George Goodwin officiating and pallbearers named from the Rosenberry family.
The Cub Scouts met at the cabin for a May gathering with a Circus theme. Joe Roberts received a two year pin and lion book, Leon Johnson and Paul McKeag earned wolf badges with gold arrows, Don Eklund earned a wolf badge, Craig Monson became a Bobcat, and den mothers Mrs Cecil Vaughn and Mrs W H McKeag were awarded six month pins.
Ralph and A A Tschauner arrived from Claremore Oklahoma Saturday to visit their mother Mrs J H Tschauner and brother in law and sister Mr and Mrs Ray Fellows. Florence Miller Grand Island and Leslie Jarmin Scottsbluff dined with Chas Stewart family. Roc Miller and Flossie Deeds attended Valley graduation where Carolyn Deeds won Teachers and American Legion scholarships and was named National High School Honor Society pin holder. Osceola folks returned Saturday with the Orlos family Alma Nebraska who spent Sunday with Mrs Deeds.
Local appeal for funds continues to support a truck and large water tank for rural fires. Donations arrive daily, but more givers are needed, as town use is anticipated alongside rural needs. Contributions may be sent to Martin Robets Kepners or the Osceola Record, checks to Osceola Fire Department. Total to date shows 310.00 with multiple individual gifts listed.
The account lists numerous attendees from across Nebraska and surrounding states including Mr. and Mrs. Ross King of Omaha, the McBeth brothers and families, Don Byers and relatives, plus many others from Lincoln, Grand Island, Columbus, Alliance, and beyond. Conversation and handshakes framed the day as old friendships renewed against a backdrop of reflection and memory.
Public transfer notices show Ralph R Johnson selling a 150 by 25 foot tract to H S Eklund in 21 14 2 and Zetta B Nelson with others selling a 300 by 390 foot tract in NE SE 12 13 3 to Charles F Johnson and wife. Another entry shows Ralph R Johnson transferring feet in SW NE 21 to Perry N Sapp, and Perry N Sapp transferring NA in SW NEX 21.
A dark bay race horse insured for 10 000 dollars disappeared from its corral earlier this week and remained unfound by Wednesday morning. Sheriff Willard Cornell was handling the investigation with routines of tracking the animal said seen south of town toward Anaconda.
A Memorial Day ceremony at Osceola cemetery drew five to six hundred attendees. Wm Wolfe Post 91 and the American Legion Auxiliary organized the program with help from the Boy Scouts and Osceola school band. Rev. Homer P. Bollinger gave the invocation and Rev. Robert Johnson delivered the principal address urging stricter reflection on war’s futility.
Mrs. Addie Wieseman won a four piece silver coffee service from Wobig and Son Equipment Co during their May sale of Maytag appliances. Her name was drawn from a box of names deposited during the sale.
Mr and Mrs George Hruska and their sons from Omaha visited Mrs Mary Cerny and Elsie over Sunday and Monday, sharing time with family and friends in a local gathering.
Sixteen Nebraska 4-H Club girls will be guests of the Omaha Chamber of Commerce during State 4-H Week starting May 31. Among them are Meredith Lamoree and Davida Sundberg of Stromsburg for 4-H Clothing Demonstrations. The group will visit Lincoln for three days touring industries the College of Agriculture and participating in discussion groups.
The Osceola Story, a feature on the city and its residents by Del Snodgrass, will appear in the Lincoln Sunday newspaper this coming Sunday June 7. Snodgrass spent days in Osceola two months ago interviewing residents and taking photos for the piece. Local stands will stock the Sunday edition and extra copies can be ordered from dealers before Sunday. An ad with the article and carrier and dealer names appears in this issue of the Record.
The Lindblade family held its annual reunion at Buckley Park in Stromsburg on Sunday May 29 with a picnic and later lunch. Attendees included Minnie Nelson Henry Gerdes Lamont Sunderman Floyd Parker and many relatives from Lincoln Omaha Iowa Kearney and nearby areas with a committee chosen for next year.
Ed Schroeder of Blair, Iowa, on a routine call to Forrest Burgess, saw smoke from the Burgess residence attic and notified neighbors. Osceola firemen arrived swiftly, contained the blaze to the attic, and the house owned by James McBeth escaped major damage.
Religious vacation school and catechetical instruction for youth at St. Vincent Church end Sunday June 5 with 7 30 mass. Ten children including Francis Barry Kathleen Barry Allen Brabec Karen Gondringer Danny Husak Di anne Lux Linda Johnson David Klein Tom Schinzel and Dick Treadway will receive holy communion for the first time. Parishioners hold a picnic in the city park after a 12 30 dinner.
The Osceola High School Alumni Banquet Friday May 27 drew about 350 attendees, many traveling long distances. The program featured brief class reports from the honors groups ending in 5, words from Ada Linquist and Robert Campbell, and dancing to Johnny Cox and his orchestra after a short program. Bernie Gissler was chosen to lead next year.
In the latter part of May the territory received 2 to 3.5 inches of rainfall, with Osceola recording 2.28 inches on Harold Klingman’s charts. Most rain fell Wednesday night and Thursday, temperatures cooled late in the month from early highs, ending near average, with a high of 98 on the 7th and a low of 35 on the 8th. Mr and Mrs Warren Umshler and children of Chadron visited local residents from Friday to Monday, as the Wallace Gustafson family of Columbus joined on Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Johnson celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary with an open house Sunday afternoon from three to five o'clock. The event is at Calvary Lutheran Church in Swede Home with a short program at 3 30.
Osceola softball standings stay led by the Crouses and Siglers with three wins no losses. Maleks hold third with three and one. Watts and Johnsons are fourth at two and two. Andersons four and two. Kepners last with four losses. Batting shifts show Wally McKeag at .615. Bollinger slides to .500.
Osceola Volunteer Fire Department elected officers for the ensuing year at its latest meeting. Officers include Lawrence Bowe president Lee Johnson president M. E. Roberts secretary Floyd Headlee chief Norman Finte] first assistant Victor Cerny second assistant and third assistant. The group pledged the proceeds from the recent Havens dance to the Tank-Truck fund and added 75 dollars to the fund.
The Spalding Enterprise reported Sunday dinner and afternoon visits by Osceola residents George P. Mace and Lesta, with Shelby sisters Loretta Klein and Mary and Rose Conway. Mace, a Polk County pioneer who first settled there in 1882, will soon be 95 and still active, owning about 300 acres of rich bottom land and farming without a tractor.
Osceola stock car races were called off last Sunday due to a too dry track despite efforts by the fire department to wet the surface. Drivers and car owners refused to race, fearing damage ahead of a big Memorial Day event, with refunds issued as the crowd departed and a future decision pending.
St Andrew Holy Name Society plans a June 6 meeting at 8 p m in the parish hall with Alfred Bernt as host. Rebekah Lodge schedules its regular meeting for Wednesday evening June 8 at 8:00 p m.
Memorial Day in Osceola drew mourners and travelers from distant regions as graves were tended and a Legion sponsored service honored the departed. The cemetery looked beautiful amid abundant blooms and the community, despite rainy weather and a canceled race, remained upbeat about the fair and agriculture. Dr. Charles W. Jeffrey visited, inspecting the Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Hospital project, while Ruby Lewis joined The Record as front office manager, expanding local coverage. Weather shifts and fresh crops bring cautious optimism to residents.
