The Osceola school celebrates the Class of 1910 with graduating plans and praise for Supt. Moore and the teaching staff. Details highlight the high school’s progress, debate team effort, school paper, athletic success, and anticipated staff changes for September.
A blaze at 10:36 a.m. Tuesday consumed the R. H. McBeth farm home four miles northeast of Osceola and three miles west of Shelby. Mrs. McBeth suffered severe burns fighting the fire after kerosene had been left on a stove. she saved the baby and both families evacuated. The house, insured for about $500, with $200 on furniture, was a total loss. The couple’s son Harry witnessed an explosion as the fire spread rapidly. Authorities and neighbors coordinated efforts, with Osceola and Shelby alerted.
Osceola observes Decoration Day with a well attended program at the Grand Army hall and Auditorium. Miss Myrtle Dolan, Miss Margaret Aepes, Miss Olive McBeth and Miss Marie Mickey received praise for recitations and performances. Dr. A A Randell spoke on the flag and veterans pensions. The march to the cemetery ended with graves decorated in flowers and a salute by veterans. Lieut Frank D Mills was to lead but was detained. The L O O F and public school children joined the ceremonies. Citizens showed appreciation for the Grand Army and veteran soldiers of the Republic. May the Veterans be honored again.
The board of education lists the selections for next year. High School includes C. B. Moore as superintendent and teachers Miss Kittie Wilson Miss Bertha Reed Miss Benlakh Swan. Grammar department lists Miss Jennie Wilson. First Intermediate selects Miss Gladys McConauzhy and Second Intermediate Miss Florence Bartlett. First Primary picks Miss Daisy Sheppard and Second Primary Mrs. Marquig.
Public auction planned for Wednesday June 8 1910 at 2 PM at the south door of Osceola Nebraska courthouse selling 257 acres of land near Osceola and Shelby from the Fentress estate in tracts for best advantage. Property includes fair improvements and good orchard. Prospective buyers may view land any day prior to sale.
Memorial Sunday services were held last Sunday at the MEL church. Veterans of the Grand Army and the Relief Corps women assembled at their hall and marched to the church. Rev. G G Grassmueck of the German Methodist church preached a soldierly sermon based on his World War experience. The union service included all Dece Ola congregations and drew a crowded church.
