A county fair afternoon yields purple blue ribbons for adults and 4-H members. Muddy grounds after a Sunday rain dampen the atmosphere while a cheerful midway and painted storefronts brighten town scenes.
Boy Scout Troop 162 will pick up Hed or bagged newspapers this Saturday July 30 starting at 1 p.m. Paper bundles should be placed in front of houses or on porches for collection and recycling.
Nine members of Boy Scout Troop 162 attended summer camp July 17 23 at the Cornhusker Council Scout Reservation near Humboldt with Scoutmaster Norman Hofbauer and assistant Buddy Mautz. Becker earned four mile swims and Becker was called out to the Order of the Arrow.
A portable exhibit titled The Choices Ahead Resources Community Family and Farm in Nebraska will be shown at the Polk County Fair Thursday. The 8-10 minute slide tapes, graphic displays and handouts are funded in part by the Nebraska Humanities Committee and will feature Jim Stillman and Becky Hanna who will discuss family life technology farming energy and community life questions with attendees.
Mary Gushee writes from Osceola Nebraska Aug 10 1873 describing illness delaying a move to join Llewlyn her fiancé. She notes health good for him and harvest work by Mr Hills and others. A second letter dated Oct 2 1873 from Mary reports Mary arriving with her nephew Tommie Posey and adjusting to life with J D Hills, building a sod stable, cutting wood and corn husking while inviting further letters and possible visit.
Central City hosts a weekend tennis tournament on the city courts near Highway 14. Women doubles play Saturday July 30 with entries due July 29 at 7 pm. men doubles Sunday July 31 with a 7 pm Saturday deadline. Starting times 8 36 am drawings, play at 9 am. entry fee small, trophies for top three. Contact Richard or Mary Vanderheiden at (308) 946-3152.
The third Ryan Hill Ladies Open on July 19 drew 57 golfers from nine area clubs for 18 holes. Shirley Nielsen of Valley View at Central City won medalist honors with a 38 and captured the championship flight. Doris Johnson was second and Eileen Day third.
Polk County farmers must report 1977 acreages of barley corn grain sorghum and wheat to the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service to determine eligibility for 1978 programs. ASC chairman Richard Sealey notes field by field reporting and stresses timely submission for harvested crops.
Congresswoman Virginia Smith urged preserving mail delivery to rural America during testimony before the Postal Operations and Services Subcommittee and the Postal Management and Modernization panel. She emphasized that cuts burden small communities and highlighted her bill to prevent unjustified post office closures and rural route consolidations.
The District 19 Board of Education met in regular session with five members present. They approved preliminary 1977-78 budget figures and set a public hearing for August 8 at 8 p.m. at the high school. The board granted Sam Flatt a tuition waiver extension and approved purchases for lunch and industrial arts, reappointed Phil Nyberg as attorney, and reviewed handbook changes and staff appointments. Outdoor basketball goals were approved and several kitchen staffing changes noted.
R James Pearson, Director of the Department of Motor Vehicles and Governor's Representative for Highway Safety, announced that 91 moving vehicle radar units were purchased with Highway Safety Program funds to be placed statewide. Polk County Sheriff's Department received one unit. A training session for officers was held at the sheriff's office.
