Gissler Trials With Vikings At Mankato Camp

Bob Gissler son of Mr and Mrs Bernie Gissler left for the Minnesota Vikings training camp in Mankato on July 27 as a free agent. He will try for outside and middle linebacker spots during the exhibition season. Seventy six players reported and the first game is August 6 in Los Angeles. Two exhibitions televised NBC August 19 Vikings Baltimore and ABC August 26 Vikings Miami. Regular season opens September 18 hosting the Dallas Cowboys. Bob is a 1976 SDSU mechanical engineering graduate and has worked at Brookings since January with a GE solar energy unit.

Osceola hosts softball finals and baseball season wrap

The 12-14 girls softball team took third in Osceola after a rainout. Ulysses beat Gresham 8-7 for first. Osceola routed Waco 15-5. In 10-11 baseball, Osceola beat Benedict 8-4 to end the season with strong pitching from Dion Buhl and Matt Peterson, aided by Todd Wheeler Chris Jensen and team.

Pastor Reimers returns from Bible Lands tour

Pastor Paul Reimers of St. Paul Lutheran Church completed a three week study trip to Rome Athens Corinth Egypt Jordan Israel and London. The group of 27 pastors and laypersons toured sites and ruins while professors and guides provided lectures. Reimers notes Israel’s blossoms and Jordan’s redirected water as signs of renewal. He offers to share his experiences with interested readers.

Scouts Becker And Dowling Prepare For National Jamboree

Thirteen Boy Scouts and two leaders from the Cornhusker Council met in Lincoln to finalize plans for a trip to the ninth annual Scout Jamboree in Butler Pennsylvania from August 3 to 9. The event draws over 30 000 participants with games camping and demonstrations. The Nebraska group will return August 11.

Fatal and injury crashes mark county road junction

A late Monday collision near Shelby left William J. Thelen dead at 22 and Eugene Reisdorff injured with head and chest trauma after a 1977 fuel truck crash. Earlier, Mike Klein was hit by a stop sign turning Kevin Schuller driven pickup near the fairgrounds with no injuries. A Friday Osceola rollover injured no one.

Habben and Kuhnel Claim Doubles Trophy in Central City

Jon Habben and Dr. Stephen Kuhnel won the second place trophy in a men’s tennis doubles tournament in Central City Sunday. Twenty four players entered, Osceola finished second after a round robin final for the championship. Matches were one set to ten games with Habben Kuhnel defeating seeds and losing a final 10-9 in a tiebreak.

Handicapped and Safety Booth Promotes Polk County Fair

Polk County Association for Retarded Citizens and Knights of Columbus set up a fair booth to raise awareness of services for disabled residents. John F Kennedy Council 5383 donated Tootsie Rolls for a prize drawing won by Mike Bryan Karlene Ekstrom Mrs J A Cerny Merle Strong children Ruth Colson and Frances Carlstrom.
