George William Morgan born July 14 1874 died July 18 aged 82. He left Nebraska in 1929 for Greenfield Iowa then Osceola retiring in 1936 and traveling with his wife. Survived by daughters Alvana Hanson Caroline. 17 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. many relatives. Funeral at Kepner Chapel with Masonic burial at Osceola family lot.

Polk County Soil Bank Extension and Weed District Tour
Under a Soil Bank agreement, the deadline extended to August 3 with a prior July 31 date. Polk County, one of five drought areas, may graze Soil Bank acreage through August 31 while corn and grain sorghums still must be destroyed by August 3. A Weed District tour in Polk and Nance counties is planned for Friday, August 3, starting 9:00 a.m. at the Polk County courthouse to inspect plots on spurge and tanweed with several chemicals tested.

The church helped fund a $50,000 loan for House of Prayer Lutheran in Richfield. Ralph and Maryanna will attend Winthrop high school. The local ASC office has been busy as farmers rush to join the Soil Bank program and receive payments. Lee Campbell of the ASC reports 34,182 corn acres entered by the prior deadline of July 20, with the extension to July 27 likely boosting numbers. 1,045 county farmers had signed up, and payouts total about $822,150.40. Deadlines for signing up and destroying crops under agreements have been extended to July 27 and August 3 respectively.

Youths Injured In One Car Accident Near York

George Campain 1886 1956 Dies at 69 in Clarks Community
George Campain son of John and Eliza Campain died July 21 1956 aged 69 years 8 months 12 days. He lived in Clarks most of life farmed for years and later lived with daughter Marie and sister Susan Burruss. He married Frances Trustos Riddle December 24 1912 at Osceola Neb. Two daughters Marie and Georgia born one daughter died in infancy. Survived by wife Marie four grandchildren two great grandchildren six brothers and four sisters. Shelby voters rejected a 550000 dollar school bond by 283 to 171, risking loss of state accreditation in three years. The State Board of Education had warned that more facilities were needed for future accreditation. The current building is described as barely adequate for 205 grade and 57 high school pupils.

Beatrice Open Golf winner Merle Backlund sets 18 hole record
Merle Backlund, 22, of Lincoln, runner up in the state golf event, won the Beatrice Open and broke the 18 hole course record with a 64. He posted 33 31 35 99 for 27 holes, surpassing the previous mark set in 1955. He is the son of Mrs. Mabel Backlund and the late L. E. Backlund.
