Polk County sees sharp rise in combines this year
Polk County farmers report six combine outfits in use this year, up from two last year. Notable machines include two old Gleaners run by Rudolf Sandin and Otto Swanson, with three new Gleaners on farms of Herman Sarow Le Roy Rhodes and the Chindgren Willer group. The Ford dealer Carson Auto Co sold one Gleaner, powered by a Fordson tractor, whic h also drives the threshing gear. A Sandin Swanson Gleaner near Swede Home was noted for single operator efficiency, cutting seven foot swaths and delivering 15 bushels to a truck. Wheat tested 61 pounds per bushel and graded Number One. The trend signals broader adoption and lower harvest costs via tractor power.

The play depicted a poor child widow in India’s high caste home life, with Mrs. Lloyd Timm directing and Mrs. Ruth Best guiding the pantomime O Zion Haste. Leon Merrick sang as soloist. seven women performed. The event raised a neat sum for the Thank Offering.

Farmer Victor Zelasny Found Dead in Granary
Victor Zelasny a bachelor farmer living eighty miles north of Osceola was found dead in a corn crib on his farm about 11 a m Monday after suffering stomach trouble. Death likely occurred Sunday morning during morning chores. Surviving relatives include his mother Mrs Katherine Valasek Duncan three brothers Frank James and Joe and two sisters Mrs Valeria Prososki Fullerton and Mrs Anna Karicek near Silver Creek plus half brother John Clarks. Funeral services were set at St Marys church south of Duncan with burial in the church cemetery.

Shelby Girl Escapes Drowning Near Columbus Pool
Miss Greta Brazee and Frank Scholz Jr., both of Shelby, were saved from drowning at Pawnee park swimming pool near Columbus about five o clock Sunday afternoon. Maurice Branigan, a Columbus youth, dragged them to shore after they sank for the third time. Brazee, unable to swim, was clinging to Scholz, who struggled to help her. Branigan leapt from the diving board, swam to a point level with them, and pulled both to shore. First aid aided Brazee who had been under water too long. both recovered quickly.

Young Englehardt Fends Off Wild Team Crash
A team of horses owned by Lloyd Timm and driven by 11 year old Eugene Englehardt, son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Englehardt, ran away from the Farmers elevator driveway and collided with a car driven by Chas Curtis. The wagon overturned and Englehardt was thrown out but escaped with a severe shake up and no serious injuries. The untamed horses then fled homeward.

Car Into Ditch Claims Girl’s Life Near Rising City
Helen Marker 16, daughter of Mr and Mrs George Marker Rising City, died after a Dodge sedan veered into a ditch three miles west of town following a tire blowout. The crash injured Eva Perry Maurice Perry and James Lendley with Eva badly bruised. Helen died instantly from a broken neck as the car rolled twice. The party had spent the evening at an Osceola skating rink and returned home late Friday night.
