Mayor Merle Haynes and the city council moved to fulfill a promise by signaling the final season for fireworks sales in South Sioux. They directed City Attorney Smith to draft an ordinance prohibiting sales in Dakota County Star.
A Stock Car races ticket taker in Arlington received a mixed sum of 20 dollars and a single dollar on Sunday night. The $20 bill was found split with a $1 on the other side and no serial number visible. Officials were reimbursed $1 by the U S Secret Service.
Voters in the district head to the polls on August 10 to decide a tax question. The measure asks to empower the district to levy up to one mill on tangible property before water delivery, funding irrigation promotion, electric power, watershed control, and agricultural stabilization or, if rejected, halt irrigation plans entirely.
A 25 year old man, Martin Ourada, drowned when he jumped to grab an inflated inner tube being towed behind a boat on Johnson Lake near Lexington. High winds hindered search efforts by a North Platte State Game Reserve crew using a 150 foot hook drag. His wife and two other couples were aboard at the time.
After years of speculation the Board of Trustees voted 19 to 12 to discontinue the four year Liberal Arts program for the coming year. The EUB denomination held the site in trust since 1890 when the school was founded. Trustees will not use the campus for school purposes any longer.
Blair travel through Blair Bridge fell in June 1954 by 5800 vehicles versus June 1953, implying about 200 fewer carloads of tourists daily. The slowdown spans regional resorts in the Black Hills and Colorado area, with Blair Enterprise noting a broader stay-at-home trend.

Mrs. L. R. Vavrina aged 67 died suddenly June 30 after surgery at Schuyler Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were July 3 at Knotts Funeral Home, David City. Burial followed in Abie Cemetery. Survived by husband, daughter Mrs Ray Sedlak of Osceola, son Ernest Vavrina of Abie, and three grandchildren.
Mrs. Ben Fin e cy passed away Tuesday morning July 13 at Rest Manor in Osceola where she resided. Survivors include one daughter Mrs Hugo DeBere of Chula Vista California and three brothers Glen Clair and Grant Willis. Funeral services set for Thursday July 15 at 2 00 p m at the Osceola funeral home with interment in Osceola cemetery conducted by Rev Bollinger.

The Luther League of St. Paul Lutheran Church sponsors a home made ice cream social at 8 p m on July 23 on the church lawn. The Osceola Band will perform and the public is invited.
Excessive heat halted crews erecting a steel building for Smith Grain Company. Workers could not handle hot steel panels and shortened hours to start at 4:00 a.m. and finish by afternoon. The structure rises south of the Smith Grain Elevator along the south side of the street.
Osceola Volunteer Fire Department was called to a grass fire at the Hubert Girard residence Tuesday. The blaze started from a rubbish pile and spread to a pasture and shelterbelt but caused no major damage to the home under construction. The alarm came just before 1 p.m. and the fire threatened nearby fields and the road.
A county irrigation tour and demonstration is planned for Thursday July 22 starting at 1 30 p m at the E E Anderson farm near Osceola. The event will visit four or five farms around Osceola and Stromsburg to view power units water intake rates laterals and structures with John Steele University of Nebraska Extension Engineer assisting. Kenneth Schmidt county extension agent at the court house can provide details.
Mayor Fred Bond warns Osceola residents that watering rule violations threaten fire safety. Water tower levels fluctuated from 60 to 65 feet and down to 55 feet amid scarce pressure, risking outages if restrictions are ignored and possibly leading to a complete watering ban.

The annual Flower Show will take place at the Osceola High School auditorium on Tuesday July 27 from 1 30 to 5 00 p m. Amateur growers may exhibit flowers with entries due by 10 30 a m and must not remove entries before 5 p m. Cash prizes will be awarded for best arrangements across classes for men women and children with additional prizes from nursery companies. Doors open 8 30 a m for exhibitors and judges. public viewing runs 1 30 to 5 00.
In 112 degree heat on Sunday July 11 Osceola pool drew over 500 bathers. Manager Jim Norton said about 500 people used the pool with 300 paid admissions and 200 season tickets. A Red Cross beginner class began with around 100 students. Travelers from many states visited the pool during the week as they passed through town.
Osceola Hospital Auxiliary announces officers for the coming year with Addie Wieseman as president Mildred Snodgrass as vice president Gladys Sedlak as secretary and treasurer. A calling committee includes Mrs Leo Kresha Mrs Milan Snodgrass and Mrs Vernon Johnson. Barbara Anderson is press correspondent. The group plans to invite county women to assist with preparing items for the Annie Jeffrey Memorial Hospital opening and welcomes new members from Polk County.

Capt and Mrs A W Kinder and children Sherry and Mike visited Don Ray Byers in Columbus on July 10. The occasion marked Mary Margaret's fifth birthday anniversary.

Mr and Mrs Martin Roberts and their children left last Wednesday for a two week vacation visiting western Nebraska and Colorado.
Anderson Mercantile topped Kepners 16 to 8 in the league second round as Maleks defeated Johnsons 12 to 5. Johnsons had beaten Andersons earlier in the round while Andersons beat Siglers 10 to 6 last Thursday. The second round winds up next week with possible plans for another round to be decided then.
Pvt. Robert Earle Johnson arrived in town this week from Fort Leonard Wood Missouri after completing basic training. He is spending his furlough with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Roy Johnson.
