A Osceola businessman received a typewritten letter from Mexico offering a chance to share in a fictitious fortune. The note promises a third of 285000 dollars from a secret trunk in a U S customs house and urges secrecy and immediate action. The letter bears no signature and lists Torreon Coach Mexico as the return address.
The Osceola courthouse lobby hosted a Monday afternoon sorghum and corn show drawing many farmers. Judges included LaVerne Peterson of Butler County. Winners included Wesley Koehler and Elton Berck of Osceola with multiple prizes funded by Stromsburg and Stromsburg sponsors.
Under Paul Monson of Osceola a second county baby beef club was formed. Orville Jones was elected President with Vernon Peterson as Vice President and Elof Anderson as Secretary. Rudolph Carlson Jr. of Stromsburg will report for the year. Members are buying calves and starting feed. any boy or girl in the territory may join by contacting Monson.
On January 12 the 1888 blizzard anniversary is observed as Eric Howland drives to School District 48 and treated pupils and the teacher. Howland was a pupil in that schoolhouse during the snow storm. That year 38 children attended, now 10 are enrolled, Miss Jean Smithberg of Stromsburg teaches there.
Mr and Mrs John Mickey announce a 10 1 4 pound son born Monday January 16. Mrs Asa Smith is a medical patient this week. Mr and Mrs Richard Matheson announce a daughter born at the hospital Saturday January 14 weighing eight pounds named Mary Kathryn.
Mrs Clara Christina Fusby born October 2 1856 in Linkoping Sweden died January 13 1939 at Stromsburg hospital age 82 years 3 months 11 days She came to America with her parents in 1874 married John Fusby November 14 1876 He preceded her in death She leaves two sons Elmer Fusby and Leonard Fusby and two daughters Mrs Charles Carlson and Mrs Edwin Conklin Burial was in Stromsburg cemetery Funeral services were at Covenant Evangelical Church.

Sunday third Sunday after Epiphany with Sunday School 10 Worship 11 and 7 30 pm Holy Communion in morning and creed discussions in evening. Polk County to plant 1400 Clarke McNary seedlings for windbreaks and woodlots. The trees cost one dollar per hundred delivered to farmers. Order blanks are at the county office. 4-H forestry clubs must organize by February 15 to receive free trees: 25 trees per member first year and 35 per member second year.
Social visits and gatherings populate the week with trips to Havens Waterloo and Osceola. Guests from Lincoln and Wyoming join family moments, including a pre nuptial shower for Martha Carlson and birthday observances for H A McCormick.
Stoner Ervin Grossnicklaus accompanied John Braithwait to Omaha Monday to bring home Mrs Braithwait and Margy who have been in the city several weeks. Misses Mildred and Charlotte Dilley of Columbus spent the weekend at the home of their sister Mrs Bill Bahr. Mr and Mrs James McKeag Jr and Howard and Mr and Mrs Harvey McKeag enjoyed Sunday dinners at the Elmer Gleim home near Gresham. Albert and Victor Allinder of Wilmer Minnesota visiting Gus and Elmer Allinder left midweek for Axtelle Nebraska to return to Minnesota. Mr and Mrs Giarrold Anderson of Stromsburg were dinner guests Sunday at the Arvid Anderson home. Mrs Marion Weary came from Omaha last Tuesday and remained until Friday with her parents Mr and Mrs August W Johnson. Mrs Grace Moberg Mrs Hazel Weeden and Birdie of Stromsburg and Mr and Mrs Lloyd Treadway and family Mr and Mrs Clarence Anderson and Mr and Mrs Floyd West spent Saturday afternoon with Mrs Hope Edith and Charles. Mr and Mrs Elmer Allinder plan to spend Thursday with his parents Mr and Mrs Gus Allinder in Stromsburg whose 56th wedding anniversary will occur that day. Mr and Mrs Joe Alt and Emma and Anthony Heimer Sr of Shelby enjoyed Sunday dinner at the John Heimer home. Mr and Mrs Horace McKeag drove to Fullerton Monday to visit Mrs McKeag's mother Mrs Russell. Arthur Warren accompanied by a friend both of Guthrie Center Town were guests over the week end at the Albert Blevins home.
The Brotherhood of Greens Chapel will hold an open meeting Monday evening January 23. The Ladies Aid gather Thursday afternoon January 26 with Mrs. W L Obrist and Mrs. D D Newcomer hosting and Mrs W L Hollister directing devotionals.
Mrs Richard Lundgren returned from Columbus hospital last Saturday. Sunday dinners were hosted by the C O Fredrickson and Myron Johnson households. The Pleasant Hill Mission Circle served supper to county teachers at High Prairie Schoolhouse. The Get-To-Gether Club meets Friday January 20. Several families visited or hosted gatherings including the Larson and Forss households. Ill children include John Johnson of Swede Home and Harold Johnsons small son Wayne.
About 27 attendees at the Muse Theatre in Osceola heard a Project Club lesson on Well Kept Farmsteads. The program featured the Rural Chorus of Polk County, a film on trees and windbreaks, and guidance from Extension specialist Rizpah Douglass and agricultural agent Howard L. Peterson on decorum, moisture, and garden relocation.
A Polk County jury deliberated four hours before upholding the will of the late Charles Barefoot Peterson. Testimony ended before noon, arguments followed after dinner, with Judge Landis giving instructions at seven. Felton may seek a new trial and has 90 days to appeal to the supreme court. The case drew considerable county attention as one of the longest in the county.
The Farmer's Union of Nebraska invites members and friends to a free educational color motion picture Under the Farmer's Union Tree on Friday January 20 at 8 p m at Rialto Theatre Stromsburg. Our Gang comedy One Wild Ride will follow with free admission tickets available from the local Farmer's Union secretary or at the Stromsburg Farmer's Oil Station.
