The note promises a third of 285000 dollars from a secret trunk in a U S customs house and urges secrecy and immediate action. Anniversary of the big blizzard prompts school visit
On January 12 the 1888 blizzard anniversary is observed as Eric Howland drives to School District 48 and treated pupils and the teacher. Howland was a pupil in that schoolhouse during the snow storm. That year 38 children attended, now 10 are enrolled, Miss Jean Smithberg of Stromsburg teaches there.
