An 1888 Nebraska blizzard described by Mrs L B Musselman, teacher at Dist 53 near Osceola, recalls the school storm on January 12 1888. She details the roof shuddering, a buggy saved by a drifting wall, rescue visits by Mr Erickson and others, and the group sharing food and fuel through a long night before escaping at dawn.

H C Hansen of Wolbach Nebraska bought Corner Drug Store from A P Witthuhn. Transaction occurred on Tuesday. Hansen has long run a Wolbach drug business and recently studied in Lincoln where his daughter attends the university. Witthuhn has not revealed future plans.

4H Club Boy Wins Nebraska Junior Corn Title

Jesse Livingston of Weeping Water led the field with 80 bushels per acre on ten acres to win the champion junior corn producer honor in Nebraska. Lester Snyder of Waverly placed second with 78 and Clarence Kintner of Weeping Water was third with 75.

Fifty Years Together Mr and Mrs E Schott Celebrate

Mr and Mrs Emil Schott marked their fiftieth wedding anniversary at their Shelby home on January 15 with friends and relatives visiting through the day. A noon dinner gathered their children and grandchildren as they recalled years since marriage in Canton Ohio after emigrating from France and settling near Osceola before moving to Shelby nine years ago. Their children Joseph Lewis Cora Clara Rosa Wagner Eva Alt Anna Nebosis remain in or near Osceola. two children have died. The Eastern Star held installation for new officers on Tuesday night. Dorothy Campbell served as installing officer and several members were named to posts such as Worthy Matron Olga Hulquest and Worthy Patron F. H. Last Saturday W F Crozier announced his candidacy for state representative on the Democratic ticket. Following him several others filed at the county clerk’s office seeking county and district roles including K A Cornish for county treasurer and W Roy VanHoosen for sheriff. Polk County Clerk records for 1929 show 159 farm mortgages totaling 641,557.68 filed and 145 farm mortgages released totaling 781,081.26. Town property mortgages numbered 42 filed totaling 73,446.51 with 56 released totaling 123,122.50. Chattel mortgages numbered 1,293 totaling 1,160,217.2 0 and 524 chattel mortgages released totaling 501,017.87.

Mrs. Helen Hern bloom Dies at 84 in Osceola Nebraska

Mrs. Helen Hern bloom died at her Osceola home at age 84 after years of illness. Born January 11 1845 in Norway she moved to America in 1869 settling in Chicago and later Osceola Nebraska. She married Gusty Hern bloom in 1873 and left eight children nine including Emil Selma Tickla Pearl and Goodwin. Funeral services were held at 2 P M Friday conducted by Rev Hed bloom of the Polk Baptist church.

State Checker Tournament Set for Osceola

Matt Sterup president of the state checker players association says the state tournament will run four days in Osceola starting Tuesday February 4. With good weather the event should attract many visitors statewide. The community club has raised a sizable prize purse and Roy Cox and Chris McCormick head the soliciting committee. The tournament will likely be held in the courthouse community room.

Nielsen Chevrolet Osceola Show Draws Crowds in 1930 Display

Hundreds filled the Nielsen Chevrolet salesroom in Osceola last week to view the 1930 cars and truck. Seven new cars and one truck were sold in the first seven days, signaling strong public interest in the new power 50 horsepower motor, Lovejoy shock absorbers, enclosed brakes, and other improvements. Tyrrell, manager and partner, says crowd interest surpasses any prior local auto show, with Detroit central office reporting sales well above expectations.
