Polk County 1948 March of Dimes Campaign Launch

Polk County opens the 1948 March of Dimes drive on January 15 with county director Edith Heilman and city directors Hazel Hedbloom Osceola Hazel McFadden Polk Cliff Cramer Shelby and Mrs Walter White Stromsburg. The 1947 local per capita reached 173 and 872 in Hitchcock County. the drive aims to raise about 3000 to replenish the local treasury and support nine patient services while contributing to the national foundation.

Dairy Herd Improvement Training Course Planned at Nebraska

Farmers from Polk County attended the State Weed Meeting where diverse equipment and chemical exhibits were shown. The Polk County Landowners Annual Weed Meeting is set for February 10 in Osceola, with notices to be published later per statute.

Shelby couple celebrate fiftieth wedding anniversary at home

Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Brigham marked 50 years of marriage with open house in Shelby on January 1. Guests included family and Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Casselberry who attended their wedding. The couple’s daughter Jean lives in Pittsburgh and son Rex in Shelby, with four grandchildren. Mrs. Brigham born in Nebraska. Mr. Brigham came to Polk County in 1872 from Iowa.

George Lester Shore dies after long Nebraska connection

George Lester Shore, born September 28 1871 at Newbern Iowa, died December 31 1947 in Placerville California at age 76. He lived much of his life near Osceola Nebraska, taught school, married Ella Fagg in 1892, and helped raise seven children. Funeral held in Osceola with burial there. survivors include wife, seven children, 20 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The article also notes a separate wedding of Phyllis Swanson and Donald Wiederspan in Augustana Lutheran Church with detailed ceremony descriptions.

The Central Nebraska County Welfare Directors Association executive committee met in Osceola on January 7 for a luncheon at Mrs Edith Heilman home. Members discussed by law changes and the organization aims to present proposals to the full membership for the January 22 1948 Grand Island meeting. Polk County coaches and superintendents vote to hold the county basketball tournament in Osceola Thursday and Friday February 12-13. Supt Hansen of Osceola is president and Supt Albert Heltbrink of Shelby is secretary treasurer. Playoff games begin 4:00 p.m. Thursday with Stromsburg Osceola second teams, 5:30 Polk Shelby second teams. Varsity games start 7:00 p.m. Osceola Polk, then Shelby Stromsburg. Albert Grossnicklaus laid to rest in Osceola funeral

Albert Grossnicklaus age 83 died January 7 1948 at home in Osceola after a long illness. He was born August 14 1864 in Straffisberg Switzerland and immigrated in 1870 with his parents. He married Kathrine Schmoker in 1887 and had three children Alfred Adolph and Eda Burrit. Funeral services were held January 10 at his home conducted by Rev. Randall. interment in Osceola cemetery beside his wife.
