At Shelby last Thursday Polk & Butler Co Insurance observed its 50th year. About 400 policy holders attended the meeting and dinner. The company organized February 23, 1892 and has had four presidents and four secretaries. Current officers are Geo W Engelhardt president W H Smith secretary and C E Casselberry treasurer. The firm has 1200 policy holders and has paid out 244396 in losses.

Three Merchants Dropped From Food Stamp Lists
Two Columbus and one Lincoln merchants have been denied participation in the federal food stamp plan. Roy H. Civil War Veteran Narrowly Escapes Gas Fumes
Wm. Fetters, 94, Stromsburg, Polk County’s last surviving Civil War veteran, faced a near fatal asphyxiation Sunday night when a defective chimney trapped fumes from a gas heater. He, his niece Ruth Larson, and Laura Stever were overcome and are recovering at Stromsburg hospital.

Obituary of Nelson Oren Brown Rural Carrier 1880 1942
Nelson Oren Brown born May 22 1880 on a farm near Osceola died January 8 1942 at his Osceola home after a long illness. He became a rural mail carrier in 1918 serving 23 years until December 1940. He married Hazel E Whitehead October 28 1914 and lived on the groom’s farm before moving to Osceola. He was active in the Methodist Church Odd Fellows Woodmen Rural Carriers Association and the National Dahlia Club. He leaves his wife three sisters three brothers and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held January 10 at the family residence conducted by Rev A W Lapthorne.
