Pvt. FC Don Jarmin, 39, Shelby High School class of 1925 graduate, ran a Shelby business for six years before joining the army in June 1942. He is a serviceman serving in the U.S. armed forces.
Two federal men will be in Osceola on January 21 and 22 to assist citizens in making out their home tax returns. They will be at the probate court room on the second floor of the courthouse both days. John S. Anderson wins election contest in county clerk race by 19 votes after recount confirms 1557 for Anderson and 1538 for Sophia Kresha.
Mr and Mrs F P Shermadine celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary at home on Tuesday. They were married January 12 1893 at her parents house north of Osceola and have resided in or near the community for fifty years. They have five children fifteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
P E Sickles 47 a Union Pacific ticket agent at Columbus died suddenly at work Saturday afternoon heart attack He formerly lived in Osceola where he was a depot operator about twenty years ago He was a Mason in Columbus Lodge and was to be installed as Master elect Wednesday He is survived by his widow Lillian Timm Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Columbus Wednesday

Dr L W Elwood, longtime physician for the Sand Hill community around Thedford, ended his work January 5 due to large territory. The Elwoods visited Silver Creek on Christmas Eve and planned to relocate to the Grand Island Sand Ordnance plant site.

Mr and Mrs William Markhover and family of Columbus visited Herman Thelen’s home Sunday afternoon. Miss Ethel Thelen is employed at the Orthopedic hospital in Lincoln. Leonard Hiemer received word that his brother Arthur Gabriel now in the army has moved to El Paso to attend medical school. Ernie Gabriel is stationed at Fort Leavenworth. Mrs Matt Glatter was named Guild president for the coming year at the Shelby meeting. Various Gabriel and Hiemer family members visited Leonard Hiemer Sunday evening.

Visits and travels abound with Monetha Newman of Broken Bow attending Lincoln meetings, housewarming for Mr. and Mrs. Davis east of Shelby, and Peter Seberger buying the John Alt estate west Shelby residence. Various residents visit kin, move to new jobs, or travel to Lincoln and Omaha for work and family matters.
Margar et Phyllis Boden and Henry Franklin Buresh wed at St Paul Lutheran Church on Sunday January 10. Rev. Everett Bexell officiated. Attendants were Ruth Boden and Kent White. The couple will live south of Osceola after a brief wedding trip.
Mr and Mrs Dwayne Fox announce a son born last Friday at Central City hospital. Mr and Mrs David Smith are parents of a son born Jan 7 at Grand Island hospital. Thirty ladies honored Mrs Ethel Webb Larson at a shower at the Heitzman home. The Anderson baby ill with pneumonia but improved. Neighbors and families shared meals and visits at multiple local homes including Havens and Osceola area engagements.

Wesley Chapel reports Mr. and Mrs. Neil Dawes and son of Bassett visited Leona Dawes as they traveled to Lincoln for a county agent conference with Brouse of Cherry County. Stanley Lockard, Navy man in San Diego, spent time with his parents, and relatives gathered to honor him. Mrs. Henry Stalley and Hans King of Omaha visited the Brandt family. Floyd West received a Christmas cablegram from Staff Sergeant Lawrence Davis in Africa, who went on the first big convoy.
Seed testing service in the state seed laboratory is available for free to Polk County farmers. Extension Agent Ray J. Cruise notes samples may be brought to the extension office and forwarded to the lab, with up to five samples per farmer per month. One pint of representative seed is sufficient for testing. Nebraska law requires testing for germination and purity for all seed sold in the state.
The county board of commissioners held their organization meeting Tuesday and re elected Arthur S Nelson as chairman for a third consecutive year.

Donald R. Lees, 31, a first class private in the U S Army, entered service April 30 1942 and was stationed at Barkdale Field near Shreveport Louisiana before departing in December for parts unknown. The Osceola Lodge of the I O O F installed officers for the coming year including Noble Grand Martin E. Roberts and Vice Grand Richard Matheson. The Rebekahs installed Noble Grand Mrs W W Norton and other officers led by Mrs Fannie McCray and Mrs Lois Grossnicklaus.
Dale Enyeart returned from Hayward California after visiting his sister Mrs. Wm Kaeler and family the past month. Mrs Frank Seberger visited with Mrs Walter Tschauner in Columbus Wednesday. Mrs Matt Jarecki and family of near Columbus visited Sunday her daughter Mrs James Gonka and family. Mr and Mrs Harry Naunberg and son of near Columbus visited Sunday with Mrs Naunbergs sister Mrs Orville Enyeart and family. Mr and Mrs Walter Tschauner and Ronnie of Columbus were Sunday visitors in the Frank Seberger home.
The Bulldogs lost 39 21 as Silver Creek built a 10 1 first quarter lead and 21 7 at halftime. Parks led the locals with nine points but the team never found its stride until the second half. Amshiler scored 17 for Silver Creek. A second team win followed 29 15 with Bud Anderson scoring twice late.
