Community mourns Chub Miller a long time Osceola Volunteer Fireman and former chief who led parades from the fire engine. He was a familiar football lineman and well known in town activities as Osceola weighs civic outlook and growth amid talks of annexation.
Effective Tuesday February 25 the City Council order put one way traffic on portions of Kimmel and Smith Streets near the High School and Grade School. Signs restrict traffic to the east side of Kimmel and pedestrians to the west side. Students must cooperate with the new pedestrian and vehicle restrictions.
The Polk County Recreational Association Clubhouse was broken into sometime before 3:00 a.m. Sunday February 23. An undetermined amount of cash was stolen while Merlin Larson the club manager said no interior damage and nothing else appears to be taken. Sheriff Reynold Peterson noted the break in likely occurred around the early hours.
The Polk County Country Club extends Sunday public buffets through March and hosts Wednesday Family Night suppers. A ladies card party is set for Thursday afternoon March 20, Ceva Carlson headlines a sing along March 15 from 9 PM to close, a fish fry runs March 21 7 PM to 10 PM, and a Junior Hi dance is sponsored March 28 from 7:30 PM to 10 PM.
The high school musical Bye Bye Birdie is rescheduled for 8:00 p.m. Friday March 7 at the High School auditorium after an original Feb 22 cancellation due to bad weather. Ticket prices remain $1 for adults 50 cents for students and 35 cents for younger pupils. Tickets from cast members or at the door.
The Osceola Chamber of Commerce unanimously backs the Osceola Bulldog band invitation to Nebraskaland Days in North Platte on June 10 and agrees to fund bus gas. They plan Farm and Home Day on March 12, send a Lincoln delegation March 3 to R C hearing, and discuss establishing an Osceola Newcomers Welcoming Committee and locating a community doctor.
Eldena Lindblade shares a hospital visit at Bryan Memorial Hospital where many Osceola residents gathered. Guests included Maurice Van Houten of Trenton Missouri Dale Clark and daughters Newman Grove Rolland Gissler and family Central City Bernie Gissler and family Norman Clark and daughter Stromsburg.
James Peterson and other Midland College students excel in GREs with high biology and education scores. In biology Midland averaged 74 against a national 54. in education 66 versus 46 with 92 students. Top biology scorer James Peterson of Osceola, son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Peterson.
On Monday February 24 at the high school 21 students were listed as sick by Supt Virgil Bugbee. At the grade school 19 were out. He said a severe flu is chiefly driving the absenteeism, though no teachers were out and he expects attendance to improve as the epidemic peaks pass.
Mike Wieseman son of Mr and Mrs Bill Wieseman of Silver Creek spends two weeks at home after boat training at the San Diego naval base. He arrived February 13 and will return to San Diego to attend the Class A shipfitting school.
Tim R. Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Anderson, has been promoted to Specialist 4th Class. He serves with the 5th Artillery near Frankfurt, Germany, and is stationed at SP4 Timothy R. Anderson US 56545340 Btry. A., 2nd BN., 5th Arty. APO New York 09162.
Residents are told to beware of a door to door saleswoman in Osceola using a school survey pitch to push an encyclopedia on a promotional basis. The Lincoln BBB warns to scrutinize the fine print and potential high cost. City Clerk Fred Bond notes no city permission granted. Report suspected fraud to Sheriff Reynolds Peterson or Officer Jack Harrison. The ordinance protects residents and can be enforced with awareness.
The Polk County event in Osceola will feature separate morning programs for men and women starting at 9:50 a.m. at the High School Auditorium. Topics include corporate farming with Phil Henderson and Senator Maurice Kremer, while Dee Clouse discusses homemaker storage aids. Dr. Bert Evans leads a Community Developments session after lunch, with discussions on county zoning and school re-districting.
Nearly seventy Polk County Girl Scouts entertained their fathers Sunday at a Date with Dad program in the Shelby School auditorium. Troops presented colors, skits, dances, and sketches including a Philippine dance and a Valentine play. The event marked the first neighborhood wide gathering since troops organized last spring.
