Community mourns Chub Miller a long time Osceola Volunteer Fireman and former chief who led parades from the fire engine. He was a familiar football lineman and well known in town activities as Osceola weighs civic outlook and growth amid talks of annexation.

City imposes one way streets near schools

Effective Tuesday February 25 the City Council order put one way traffic on portions of Kimmel and Smith Streets near the High School and Grade School. Signs restrict traffic to the east side of Kimmel and pedestrians to the west side. Students must cooperate with the new pedestrian and vehicle restrictions.

Country Club Burglarized Early Sunday Morning

The Polk County Recreational Association Clubhouse was broken into sometime before 3:00 a.m. Sunday February 23. An undetermined amount of cash was stolen while Merlin Larson the club manager said no interior damage and nothing else appears to be taken. Sheriff Reynold Peterson noted the break in likely occurred around the early hours.

Country Club March Events Include Buffets and Dances

The Polk County Country Club extends Sunday public buffets through March and hosts Wednesday Family Night suppers. A ladies card party is set for Thursday afternoon March 20, Ceva Carlson headlines a sing along March 15 from 9 PM to close, a fish fry runs March 21 7 PM to 10 PM, and a Junior Hi dance is sponsored March 28 from 7:30 PM to 10 PM.

Bye Bye Birdie postponed to Friday March 7

The high school musical Bye Bye Birdie is rescheduled for 8:00 p.m. Friday March 7 at the High School auditorium after an original Feb 22 cancellation due to bad weather. Ticket prices remain $1 for adults 50 cents for students and 35 cents for younger pupils. Tickets from cast members or at the door.

Midland College Students Shine in National Exams

James Peterson and other Midland College students excel in GREs with high biology and education scores. In biology Midland averaged 74 against a national 54. in education 66 versus 46 with 92 students. Top biology scorer James Peterson of Osceola, son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Peterson.

Flu hits school attendance amid viral illness

On Monday February 24 at the high school 21 students were listed as sick by Supt Virgil Bugbee. At the grade school 19 were out. He said a severe flu is chiefly driving the absenteeism, though no teachers were out and he expects attendance to improve as the epidemic peaks pass.

Wieseman to Leave for San Diego Navy School

Mike Wieseman son of Mr and Mrs Bill Wieseman of Silver Creek spends two weeks at home after boat training at the San Diego naval base. He arrived February 13 and will return to San Diego to attend the Class A shipfitting school.

County Girl Scouts entertain fathers Date with Dad event at Shelby School

Nearly seventy Polk County Girl Scouts entertained their fathers Sunday at a Date with Dad program in the Shelby School auditorium. Troops presented colors, skits, dances, and sketches including a Philippine dance and a Valentine play. The event marked the first neighborhood wide gathering since troops organized last spring.
