Forty-One Students In Spelling Contest
Forty one students from Osceola Stromsburg and Shelby entered the Polk County Spelling Contest at Jeffrey Elementary School on February 19. In the morning session fifth and sixth graders competed with Linnea Jones first place, Jan Anderson second, Scott King third, Beverly Bryan fourth. Junior high afternoon winners were Ken Stachura first, Kevin Jurrens second, Deb Neujahr third, Carole Podraza fourth. Winners advance to the District Spelling Contest in Fairbury on March 8. Stachura will represent Polk County at the Midwest Spelling Bee April 30 in Omaha, with Jurrens as alternate.

Republican City sent 98 pound Brad Gabriel to the Class D state meet in Lincoln, coached by his father Ben Gabriel. Brad and his 145 pound brother Tim were the town’s entire mat squad as Republican City does not offer wrestling. Brad, who teaches math and coaches track and football, lost 5-4 to Dale Harvey of Harrisburg in the opening round.

New Manager Named For Co op Oil
Robert Swanson named general manager of Co op Oil Inc effective April 1. A Stromsburg native and Northwest High Omaha former teacher, he holds a BA from Kearney State 1970 and MA 1972 after Navy service. The Swanson family plans to move from Elkhorn to Stromsburg as housing allows and Swanson will oversee stations at Rising City Osceola Polk Silver Creek and Stromsburg with interim manager Andy Anderson of Colorado leaving.
