It's Either Spruce up or Die Crabs Towns Attain No Youth

Kenneth Bowen executive secretary of the League of Nebraska Municipalities warns Nebraska's small towns face extinction without renewal. He urges legislative involvement, county cooperation, and local investment to attract and retain youth, improve business and residential districts, and foster community pride. He notes many cities lack population and that action is required to reverse the rural decline.

Winners in Osceola Women's City Bowling Tourney

Polk and Butler Insurance led the Osceola Women s City bowling tournament at Lorre Lanes over the February weekend. Blanche Donelson Norma Lindburg Mary Lou Hahn Virginia Farley and Marge Johnson rolled 2556 for high team. Arlene Tenniges claimed the singles trophy with 570 while Camilla Grossnicklaus and Phyl Eriksen won high doubles at 1091. Mavis Rowan captured All Events Handicap 1608 and Pat Miller All Events Scratch 1517. Twenty one teams entered with 28 doubles and 44 singles sets.

Nebraska State Patrol tests VASCAR for speed timing

State Patrol in Polk County area tests VASCAR to measure vehicle speed using time and distance. Trooper Jerry Krieger completed 20 day training and is certified as VASCAR operator starting February 1. From March 1 warnings only, then possible summons. device offers average speed, single-operator use, and lower cost than radar.

Plans for 6th Annual Old Times Day Set

Old Times Day Committee led by Martin Jones announces plans for the 6th annual event on Saturday May 31 because June 1 falls on Sunday. Activities include patriotic window displays, a variety parade and show with prizes, and sponsorships for floats. Reservations for parade and stand entries go to Lee Schroeder and Mrs. Duane Schmoker. Terry Lewis of Osceola has been accepted at Grand Island School of Huiee for June 9 1969, with Osceola High School graduation planned in spring.

Osceola City Council approves two street one way order

The Osceola City Council on February 6 issued a one way traffic order for Smith Street and Kimmel Street from the corner of Smith and Main to Kimmel Street and from Kimmel and Smith to Kimmel and Central. The plan designates easterly vehicle movement and northbound traffic with pedestrian use in the north lane and west lane of Kimmel. No on street parking is allowed and the order runs 24 hours a day with possible temporary lift in June to August. Local residents supported the measure, stressing student cooperation. Nebraska State Patrolman John Iske helped plan the pattern.

Charles Andrew Roberts of Osceola Nebraska is listed in the 1968 69 Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. The sophomore at Norfolk Junior College majoring in Pre Mortuary is recognized for high academic standing community service leadership and potential.

Service Member Richard Ekstrom Listed for Vietnam Duty

Servicemen's addresses show Richard R. Ekstrom US 56546668 of Co A 2nd Bn 12th Cav APC San Francisco entering the service last August. He trained at Ft. Lewis and left January 20 for Vietnam. His wife Janet Girard works at First National Bank Osceola and lives with her parents, the Hubert Girards. Richard is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Rolland Ekstrom of Osceola.

Shelby Couple Observes 50th Wedding Anniversary

A reception honoring Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Bernt marked their 50th anniversary at Sacred Heart School in Shelby Nebraska. About 200 friends attended after a prior welcome dinner. Attendants included Mr. Schindler and Mrs. Alt, who were part of the 1919 wedding at St Bonaventure Church in Columbus.

Fire damages Larry Meister home near Osceola

Late Friday afternoon a blaze heavily damaged the Larry Meister residence southeast of Osceola. Osceola Volunteer Fire Department responded at about 4 45 PM with gas masks and lines to access the rear kitchen attic areas. Firefighters reported heavy smoke from the roof and walls while most damage occurred in the kitchen, upstairs and attic. Mrs Meister, the Meisters son and three Larry Larson relatives were inside when discovered by Laurence and Larry Meister. Cause of the fire is undetermined and Stromsburg Fire Department also responded.

Largest turnout at Polk County Legion convention sets record

Over 130 American Legion members attended the Osceola hosted event led by William Wolfe Post 91. Guest speaker Val Likens urged focus on child welfare rehabilitation and Vietnam veterans, with several officials in attendance. Orville Dodds elected County Commander as Stromsburg post to host 1970 convention. A resolution urged flying the American flag at the Polk County Courthouse on working days. The Osceola Legion Auxiliary served a chicken and ham dinner for about 130 delegates. A Hill Billy Band concert closed the evening.

Services Friday for Shelby Youth

Douglas Abbott 19 son of Mr and Mrs Derald Abbott Shelby died from head injuries after a motorcycle crash at the east edge of Shelby on Tuesday evening February 4. Services were held Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church Columbus with burial in the Shelby Cemetery.
