Sunday morning a fire destroyed the ice house of G. T. Ray at 3 30 am causing $150 loss with no insurance. Nightwatchman Bond sounded the alarm, enabling firefighters to confine the blaze to the structure and prevent larger damage. Fire officials suspect carelessness rather than arson amid town vandalism reports.
The article reports the death of Alex Yeltman from pneumonia and ensuing complications after six months of illness. Albert Jones sells the Jones Grocery to Alvin Monson and Arthur Nelson. The store becomes The Peoples Grocery with a new front and improved display. R M Gillepie remains head clerk, Monson and Nelson bring local goodwill and plan a successful community friendly operation.
Fire alarms sounded at 7 pm as hay mow flames consumed the annex to the Gubser stallion barn near the Ray Ice house. Firefighters rescued the horse, guarded the site with a National Guard detail, and authorities vow rapid investigation into possible arson linked to yesterday’s blaze.
Adam Herrmann complains a wheat thief damaged grain at his farm and left without cleaning up spilled wheat while Fred Timm reports a cellar break in with jars of fruit taken. Officials urge action to prevent repeats as buyers seek a South Osceola property listing with house and 21 1/2 acres of land for quick sale.
Jar Boe from Central City travels to Stromsburg on business today. He is joined by visiting relatives and friends including Mies Hime and Olson.
Osceola invites county spellers to next Friday night February 6 at the Armory for a second old fashioned spelling match with three cash prizes in the down contest and an armory trial spelling event. Prizes of 5 38 and 1 dollars will be awarded to the last three spellers remaining on the floor and the winner respectively. Merchants sponsor the prizes and full details appear in Thursday's Record.
Church notes report next Sunday services at the Lutheran church and a Tuesday evening basement sale conducted by the Busy Bees with hand-embroidered items. Also listed are Ladies Aid and S. S. activities with a program including songs, scripture, recitations and solos. Local residents travel for business and shopping with several price-focused ads from Monson's for fur coats and suits.
Tom Dornan consulted Dr. Byers on livestock inspections for stallers this week in Osceola. O N Michener rode to Osceola yesterday, while J C Bennett J Reader and Senator Krumbach visited the county seat today. George Finkhouser and John Raitt, Polk County farmers, plan moves to Minnesota and a northern Nebraska ranch respectively. the Scow Place will be edited by Fred and Oliver Scow. The W C T U plans a regular meeting Tuesday at 7 30 hosted by Mrs Issac Merrick for progress reform supporters from Nebraska and Osceola.
