Edwin D. Miller, a 21 year old Polk County youth, has joined the U S Army and serves as a Private with the Coast Artillery at Fort Slocum New York. He entered service July 25 1942 and is the son of Mr and Mrs Fred Miller.
Mrs. Mary E McCoy formerly of Osceola died Sunday at the Masonic Home in Plattsmouth at age 81. She leaves a daughter four grandchildren and four great grandchildren and was sister of Mrs W H Clark of Osceola. Funeral services will be Thursday at 1 pm from the Methodist church with interment in Osceola cemetery.
A scrap yard discovery yields 43 silver dollars hidden under a seat in an old car brought in during a county scrap rush. The finders split the coins as a Christmas gift, with no information on how long they had been hidden or who placed them there.
A light golden raccoon with brown eye markings and dark tail rings was trapped by Claude Hamilton of Valentine on the Valen tine Lakes Migratory Waterfowl refuge. Game Commission officials aim to obtain the animal for experimental and exhibition purposes.
An 18 year old Caspian Michigan girl Jenny de Gianvencen 20 pleaded guilty to participation in a car theft ring and robbery. She was arraigned in federal court in Omaha on transporting a stolen car from Logan Iowa to Nebraska. Four youths arrested near Austin Texas are held in Chicago on similar charges.

Edith Hope 50 of Osceola died Monday evening when a Near Stage line bus collided head on with a stock truck east of Brainard in Butler County. Bus driver John Braithwait of Osceola was hospitalized at Wahoo with nonfatal injuries. seven other bus passengers were bruised. The stock truck owned by Everett Powell, loaded with cattle and driven by Myron Hanson, was en route to Omaha. Hanson was uninjured. Most bus occupants were Polk County residents returning from Omaha. Funeral arrangements for Miss Hope had not been made.
Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Burritt hosted relatives from Minnesota and local families on Christmas Day. Lieut. Harold Adams, stationed at Quantico, Virginia, sent a photo home. Several local residents and guests from Columbus, Shelby, Stromsburg, and Osceola attended gatherings and station breaks. Osceola punished City 27 19 in the first team game with a slow start and cold shooting. Dick Mills scored 12 and Gene Cole 8 as Osceola opened the season with a rough win. The second team dominated 39 16 led by Bill Umshler with 19 points ahead of conference play December 30 vs Clarks.
Mrs. Floyde Hester and family of Grand Island and several others visited Ed Rosenberry's home for Christmas. Carriers travel from Columbus to Illinois, Lincoln, St. Edwards, Omaha, Greeley, and Lincoln area relatives joined in holiday greetings and gatherings with Polk and Butler County families.
The long duck season ends with dull overall results but several sportsmen in the west report at least nominal success. Officials cite scarce southbound birds or shifted flyways as reasons, while abundant impounded water across the state may influence migration of ducks and geese.

Polk County committeemen at the courthouse reviewed the 1948 War Production Program. AAA chair Robert C. Taddiken led the session with Hans O. Jensen explaining the farm plan for January interviews on milk poultry hogs and crop plans. Corn testing and 1942 sealed cribs noted with a 5 percent allotment rise and a 77 cent corn loan rate.
Francis A. McGimpsey, private in the U S Army since August 24, 1942, age 31, son of Mr and Mrs Henry McGimpsey, is presently at Camp Stewart Georgia.
Extension Agent Ray L Cruise says Clarke McNary seedlings will be sold again to Polk County farmers. Eighteen varieties are offered with high survival reported in a recent Extension Service survey. Hedlund planted 100 red cedar and 100 Chinese elm near Osceola with about 90 percent survival due to proper planting and care.
Mrs. Ethel Larson visits Central City to spend the week with her sister Mrs Harold Baker and family. Glen Buchta travels from Lincoln for the holidays. Mrs George Buchta visits Denver for two weeks with her daughter. Junior McCormick and Miss Jennie Lou Buchta come from Omaha for Christmas with relatives. The Lawrence Bryan family drives to Minden for Christmas Eve. Mr and Mrs Vinson Bettinger of Omaha are Christmas guests of Don Hayes family. Don returns home with them. Mr and Mrs Donald Heinemeyer travel from Joliet Illinois for a week with relatives. Mrs Heinemeyer goes to western state to be with her parents. Mr and Mrs Clair McCormick and Mr and Mrs Wm Dake share Christmas Eve at the C L Dake home. Mrs Mina Buchta hosts a Christmas dinner for her children. About 30 relatives gather at Chalmer Daniel home for Christmas Eve from Chapman York and Polk. The writer wishes a Happy New Year to the Editor and all readers.
