City council on Monday night voted to repurchase the gas distribution system in Central City from the Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Co. The move aims to run gas distribution like the electric system and may resolve the rate increase dispute from a year ago. A lawsuit failed to secure a settlement.
Wayne Rook returned from Webber Kansas where he attended an irrigation school as Lewellen Manufacturing representative. He reports growing recognition of the locally made all steel check drops and rising demand, seen as evidence the plant is thriving in local development plans.
Blair Planning Commission discussed a proposed boulevard type drive through a new subdivision area southeast of Blair. The area lies outside city limits, with annexation needed for city maintenance of streets and utilities. </s>
A 10-ton elegrader built by the Reisser Corp of Blair is described as a flying machine designed for U S Engineers. It can be transported by plane and dropped by parachute in emergencies to repair bomber airstrips. Weighing 19,640 pounds, it breaks into two air drop parts and reassembles on the ground in under an hour.
Margaret Frisby, 32, of Rochester Minnesota, rode through Blair on an Arabian stallion named Canaat en route to Tucson Arizona. The journey covered 1700 miles and took three months. Both rider and horse reportedly stayed in good condition.
Ashland sees birth of a new industry as Great Plains Service Inc begins exporting cylinders of anhydrous ammonia. It is the first plant in Nebraska and the Midwest outside St. Louis and Kansas City. Ammonia serves as a refrigerant, water purifier, detergent, cleaning agent and key nitrogen fertilizer component.
The Chamber of Commerce plans a city hall meeting to discuss whether three federal highways should run through South Sioux City. State Engineer Ress and the road committee push for a four lane Highway 20 from Jackson to South Sioux City, noting work must start in South Sioux City and suggesting banning on street parking on Dakota Avenue before surface upgrades.
Mr and Mrs Lee Johnson were Christmas Day guests at the L. W. Salt home in Central City.

The 4-H Home Making Club hosted a Christmas party for members and mothers at assistant leader Mrs. Effie Fernandez home. After the meeting carols were sung and Mrs Gary Lux led games while refreshments were provided by Mrs Fernander. Jackie Rutter, Reporter.

Christmas Eve hosting included Alma Fyjell and Lester Widga families with Fjell relatives in Polk. Joe Fjell and Philip Nyberg households visited by many kin. Nearby, Johnson, Larson, Pehrson, Anderson, and Appleton families shared festive meals in Stromsburg, Polk, and surrounding areas.
Polk County motor vehicle registrations for 1956 begin January 3 with Carleton Anderson stating commercial units require a certified unloaded weight certificate. All trucks will display a single front plate next year, while fees rise to eight dollars for passenger cars and ten dollars for house trailers. An extension to March 1, 1956 is offered for all registrations.
W H Norton acts as referee to auction an unimproved Polk County farm known as Griffith land in Osceola. The sale, onsite at the south front door of the courthouse, will occur January 10, with the property described as SW14 of Section 36, Township 15 North, Range 3 West. Mills Mills & Mills attorneys advise and may provide details.
Funeral services are held this afternoon at Fairview church for John Arvid Carlson who died Monday December 26 after a several month illness. Rev H R Weber conducts the services and burial will be in Osceola cemetery.
Captain and Mrs. Rolland P Randell of San Antonio Texas welcomed a baby boy born Wednesday December 2st weighing four pounds nine ounces Michael Jon He is the fifth grandchild of Mr and Mrs Fred Randell of this city.
Mr and Mrs Dewey Sigler announce the engagement of their daughter Ruth Caro lyn Sigler to DeVon Harlan Johnson son of Mr and Mrs Harlan S Johnson of Stromsburg. Miss Sigler is a stenographer with R W Beck and Associates in Columbus. Mr Johnson farms with his father.
Friends and relatives are invited to a reception and open house at the basement of the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Shelby in honor of Mr and Mrs Guy Hanshew on January 7 1956 from two to five in the afternoon the couple marked their Golden Wedding Anniversary.
The Beginners Square Dance will be held at Sons of Herman Hall in Columbus on Monday January 2 at 8 00 p m. Mrs Fred Calkins Sr was taken to the University Hospital in Omaha Tuesday for medical observation.
Judging for Osceola Chamber Christmas lighting contest was completed December 20. Winners in the overall house division were Jay McDonald first, Dr. W F Monson second, Martin Anderson third. honorable mention to Ray Sedlak, Joe Schott, M A Mills Sr., and W W Norton. Window division prizes went to Marlin Johnson first, S W Calhoun second, Leonard Mrkvicka third.
Osceola stores announce holiday hours for the weekend. Most businesses will close at six Saturday evening to allow staff to observe New Year s Eve and remain closed until Tuesday morning. Since the holiday falls on a Sunday, observance shifts to Monday. Patrons should plan shopping accordingly for the double holiday.
The Night Owl Bridge Club plans a January 4 gathering with Mr and Mrs George Inness. The Matheson Arnold VFW Post 4998 and Auxiliary meet January 3 at 8 00 PM at the VFW Hall in Stromsburg with members urged to note the date change. The Busy Belles Extension Club meets January 4 with Mrs Lawrence Meister.
Vernon Boden left Monday for New Jersey after a 12 day furlough with his parents and relatives. 2nd Lt. Paul Laase, grandson of Mrs. A F Nuquist, is stationed at Camp Gordon Georgia and will begin military training in the Far East in mid January.
