City moves to reenter gas business in Central City

City council on Monday night voted to repurchase the gas distribution system in Central City from the Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Co. The move aims to run gas distribution like the electric system and may resolve the rate increase dispute from a year ago. A lawsuit failed to secure a settlement.

A 10-ton elegrader built by the Reisser Corp of Blair is described as a flying machine designed for U S Engineers. It can be transported by plane and dropped by parachute in emergencies to repair bomber airstrips. Weighing 19,640 pounds, it breaks into two air drop parts and reassembles on the ground in under an hour.

Rochester woman completes 1700 mile camel ride to Tucson

Margaret Frisby, 32, of Rochester Minnesota, rode through Blair on an Arabian stallion named Canaat en route to Tucson Arizona. The journey covered 1700 miles and took three months. Both rider and horse reportedly stayed in good condition.

Great Plains Service opens first Nebraska ammonia export plant

Ashland sees birth of a new industry as Great Plains Service Inc begins exporting cylinders of anhydrous ammonia. It is the first plant in Nebraska and the Midwest outside St. Louis and Kansas City. Ammonia serves as a refrigerant, water purifier, detergent, cleaning agent and key nitrogen fertilizer component.

The Chamber of Commerce plans a city hall meeting to discuss whether three federal highways should run through South Sioux City. Trucks Will Bear Only One Plate As Commercial Fees Rise

Polk County motor vehicle registrations for 1956 begin January 3 with Carleton Anderson stating commercial units require a certified unloaded weight certificate. All trucks will display a single front plate next year, while fees rise to eight dollars for passenger cars and ten dollars for house trailers.
