A letter from Lloyd Timm, former Osceola boy, reports he remains a prisoner of war in the Philippines since the outbreak of war. He says he and his wife are well, though his weight has dropped to 160 pounds from 180. Married men and women are kept in separate barracks but may visit, with rice as the main dish shown three times daily.
Doris Knerr and David S. Nance, both of Columbus Ohio, wed November 25 1943 at the Methodist Church in Columbus in a double ring ceremony officiated by Rev W T Witherspoon. Attendants included Harvey Knutson Kenneth Nance Evelyn Nance and Adam Mae Smith. The couple will live in Columbus and work with the Curtis Wright Corporation.
Allen Cornish has attained Master Sergeant after years of service including action at Attu and occupation duty at Kiska before transfer to the Hawaiian Islands. Russell Simonsen, son of Mrs Ben Zedicher, returned from a six month Mediterranean cruise as Chief Petty Officer. Wayne Anderson, now in the Solomon Islands, serves in the Army Signal Corps. Dr A A Wurtz of Los Angeles, a Polk alumnus and Osceola dentist, enlisted in the Navy and expects a commission soon. Art is son of W A Wurtz of Polk.
The Polk County quota lists tractors forty four and various other machinery counts. Corn pickers ten, combines ten, mowers twenty two, corn planters three, grain drills twelve, corn binders one, stationary threshers one, manure spreaders ten, side rake three. The program began December 1 and new applications go to the AAA office.

Relatives travel from San Pedro Long Beach CA and New York City to attend family matters and visit Stromsburg.
Osceola Bulldogs dominate Clark s first team and second team 35 19 in the season opener. Kenneth Schutt leads the second unit with 12 points while Donald Schutt paces the first team with 12. Osceola led 21 10 at half and 33 12 after three quarters.
Mr and Mrs John Hiemer attended the George Hasselbalch birthday gathering Wednesday. Martha Herger moved to Shelby purchasing a home. Clarence Richter and family occupied Martha Herger’s vacated farm. Several families and friends joined a Sunday dinner at Leonard Hiemer’s for Dennis Hiemer’s first birthday. Home Study Club met with 12 members and exchanged gifts. guest Mrs Harold Cockson Jr of Columbus attended.

Polk County Local Selective Service Board announces that Ray Leslie Cruise Osceola has been accepted for service and will report to Fort Leavenworth Kansas January 3 1944 for army training. Also acting County Extension Agent Philip Sutton at large previously held the post in Washington County. Registrants also accepted for armed forces include Marines Philip Andrew Smithberg Stromsburg William Frederick Smith Polk Navy Lyal Melvin Lund Stromsburg John Peter Thelen Shelby Melvin William Carter Shelby and Army Ray Leslie Cruise Osceola Raymond Samuel Bennett Osceola James Casimer Valasek Columbus and John Smith Jr Shelby.
High Prairie School benefited from a Christmas tree shipment from the Ozarks. Community members gathered for Sunday visits and dinners as local families hosted guests. Polk County AAA elected Robert C. Taddiken as chairman for the tenth year with several precinct leaders named for the new term.
Mrs Dennis Carson left Saturday for Lewellyn Nebraska after a week at her parents home Mr and Mrs Dean McCormick. The Ladies Aid bazaar at the hall Friday afternoon drew a good crowd. Mr and Mrs Wm Buchta of David City visited relatives here Wednesday. Dean McCormick and family sent their son Junior to Omaha Wednesday for train to Camp Endicott Rhode Island. Mr and Mrs George Mace hosted Sunday dinner with Rev Hamilton Miss Nelle Wisely Osceola and Mr and Mrs Tom Meacham attending.
Local pupils will present a Christmas program this Thursday evening at Blue View school. Community residents Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Salchow announce the birth of son Carl Willard at Stromsburg hospital on December 8 weighing 8 pounds 5 ounces. Mrs. Salchow is Mary Burke.
A wartime appeal urges citizens to allocate all excess income to war bonds. The message urges using Payroll Savings as the best method to support servicemen and allies, noting families and communities are tied to the fighting fronts.
Lt. Gerald B. Bachman in India has been promoted to captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps after 21 months of service. Mrs. Paul Reisdorf travels to Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, to join her stationed husband. Fern Shay returns to California after helping care for her mother's Shelby household. Mrs. Jirardin undergoes a tonsil operation in Shelby. Mrs. Maxwell visits from Colorado. Leroy Renander visits Lincoln. Martha Herger moves into a north Shelby home.
Consumers Public Power District will begin bi monthly billing for residential rural and some commercial customers as meters are read and bills issued every two months. The plan aims to cut billing and collection costs by about 15 percent and save war related resources. January 1944 rollout in one or two divisions, with gradual district wide adoption.

Master Sgt. James Brigham enlisted in the army in October 1940 in Jacksonville Florida. A Shelby high school graduate he studied at Colorado School of Forestry and worked at surveying in Hinesville Georgia. He is now stationed at Camp Gordon Florida and serves as Sergeant Major of the Personnel Dept. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Ray Brigham.
John M. Staroscik, vice chairman of Polk County AAA, announces a corn loan rate of 82 cents for Polk County. Loans run for one year. Eligible producers should contact the AAA office.
Two cards received by relatives of Chester Buchholz, a United States army prisoner of war in the Philippine Islands, carried a Japanese postmark and unsigned date. The printed and typed messages claimed Buchholz is interned in the Philippine Military Prison Camp No , in good health and sends love to family and friends.
Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce the Muse Theatre offers free matinees for children on Saturday December 18 and Friday December 24 at 2 30. Features include Gulliver's Travels in technicolor and Rawhide Rangers with Johnny Mack Brown plus short subjects. Santa Claus will greet the youngsters Friday afternoon.
Warren Randell born May 18 1863 in Bowen Illinois was a longtime Polk County stock feeder. He homesteaded near Lexington Nebraska and lived near Osceola before moving to Denver and then Topeka Kansas. Funeral services were held December 10 at Kepner Funeral Home with Rev. G A Randall. Burial in Osceola cemetery.
