Fire tragedy at Columbus trailer home claims William Witt

William Witt, 56, died from burns after a fire at his Columbus trailer Sunday night. Authorities suspect he slept with a cigarette that ignited his bed. Funeral services were held Wednesday with burial at Schuyler-Colfax County Call. A mix up in Central City's order for light poles delayed Christmas decorations as outlets were placed eight inches from the top instead of eight feet from the bottom.

Tractor crash kills local farmer near Grand Island

Donald E. Oberg, 25, an Eric son farmer, died about 7:45 Friday when the tractor he was driving home from Grand Island was rear ended by a car driven by Jerry Petska of Ord-St. Paul Phonograph. Boy Scouts collected over five tons of scrap paper from Central City residents Saturday as 11 trucks donated by local businessmen aided the effort.

Christmas Services at St Vincent Church Announced

Osceola Schools Christmas Program Set for Dec 21

The Osceola Public Schools announce the annual Christmas Program will be held in the auditorium on Thursday December 21 at 8 p m. Participating groups include the High School Band Girls Chorus Mixed Chorus Madrigal Singers and accompanists directed by John Adams. The program features carols and sacred works such as Jingle Bells Silent Night Adeste Fideles and The Lord Bless You and Keep You among others.

Peterson Farm Public Sale Set for December 18

Andrew E. Peterson will hold a public sale at the Osceola area farm five miles west and two miles south starting at 2 PM on December 18. Eleven head of cattle, farm equipment including two tractors a combine and tools part of the sale plus household goods will be sold. Dick Merrick and Ross Noble act as auctioneers with Stromsburg Bank as clerk. The Petersons plan to move into a new Osceola home soon.

Young Adult Group Hosts Progressive Christmas Party

Over forty members of the Methodist Church Young Adult Group attended their annual Christmas party. The progressive dinner began at Clair Emmons home, moved to Marlin Johnson home for the main course and dessert at Lowell Hanson home. A white elephant exchange took place and gifts were donated to Mother Jewel's Home at York.

Community raises 3351.61 for band uniforms

The community subscribed 3351.61 for band uniforms. funds are on hand and uniforms have been ordered. Delivery is expected around February first. Former Silver Creek Editor Dye F. Davis Dies at 61

Dye F. Davis, 61, longtime editor of Silver Creek, died Saturday at home after a period of illness. He had sold the Silver Creek Land, his paper of 47 years, last summer. Funeral and burial were held Tuesday in Silver Creek.

Post Office Open For Two Saturdays

Fred Schumann postmaster announces the window will be open for two Saturdays to handle mail as usual. Mail will be received and processed these days though the usual Friday noon close remains. The notice urges early mailing to improve pre Christmas delivery amid the seasonal rush.
