Osceola extends holiday greetings to all residents as the city lights the courthouse square with blue crosses and star decorations. The Muse Theatre offers a free Christmas film on December 14 with Santa on hand, while merchants host a free screening of God Is My Partner on December 19. A final free show is planned for December 21, and a home lighting contest runs December 12 to 17 with winners announced next week.

Polk County 4 H youth earned several state honors this year. Bob Swanson received Dairy and Record awards and a trip to State 4 H Club Week. Petition drive aims to elect Nebraska education head
A Nebraska School Improvement Association backed plan seeks a 1958 vote on a constitutional amendment to shift authority from the elected State Board of Education to appoint the commissioner and set pay to an elected four-year term for the commissioner. If approved, the Legislature would set the pay. The current commissioner, Dr. F B Decker, earns 10500 annually and warns the change could cause administrative chaos. The association, led by Clyde Widman, says authority can be structured by lawmakers.

Hemstroms Celebrate 50 Years of Marriage with Open House
Former residents Mr and Mrs C E Emel and Jane Hemstrom observed their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house in Gem Methodist church on Sunday November 24 from 2:00 to 4:00. About 100 relatives and friends attended. The event featured a three tier diamond shaped cake and pink and white carnations. Martin E. Silverstrand Dies at 61 in Council Bluffs
Martin E. Silverstrand, 61, of 415 Houston Ave Council Bluffs died last Wednesday December 5. He is survived by his wife Edith sons William and Larry all of Council Bluffs daughter Mrs William Melton Ann Arbor Mich sister Mrs Frank Leibee Exeter Nebr and one grandchild. Funeral services were held Saturday at St Patrick Church with interment at St Joseph cemetery. He was a son of the late Mr and Mrs Silverstrand who lived in east Osceola and the family had lived in Council Bluffs for many years.
