The Osceola community celebrates the season with homes lit for Christmas. Fairyland displays on Sherman Street headline a citywide glow, with wreaths, snowmen, and the blue star atop the Co op elevator visible from afar. Local churches observe Advent as decorations spread citywide.
At the December District 19 Board meeting in Osceola the board accepted a sex education program for the schools and approved film showings. The fire department received permission to host a spring fund raising dance. They discussed a Knights of Columbus free throw event and approved various agenda items. Superintendent Virgil Bugbee announced plans to retire effective June 30 1976.
Council member Ken Sipes led the December meeting in the mayor's absence. Richard Walsh of R. W. Beck presented a sewer lagoon plan, and the council approved contracting the Columbus firm for sewer work required by the Environmental Control Agency. Gerrard named street superintendent and a recommendation to sell city lots to Doug Holm was approved. Bills were allowed and warrants signed before adjournment.
The Osceola Lions Club requests donations of usable toys in good repair or easily fixable. Local distribution will occur and the rest goes to the U S Marine Station in Omaha. Drop off at City Hall between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. before Friday December 19.
Polk County ASC elected three members per community on December 3 1975 with Vic tor Krumbach George Gondringer Bernard Gkorger Dean R White and David Lux serving as officials. Delegates meet December 11 to choose county officer and 1976 alternates at Osceola ASCS office open to the public. Also notes a Christmas musical program December 15 at the new high school gym with no admission charged.
The Nebraska Public Service Commission approved higher local service rates for The Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph Company effective December 6, 1975. Local rates rise across Osceola and other exchanges, with residential and business increases. long distance unchanged. LT&T plans add about 1.9 million after tax in yearly net revenue. The company expands service and equipment charges and funds a record 28 million spend for 1975 improvements. LT&T serves 276,384 phones across 137 exchanges in 22 southeastern Nebraska counties.
The first Chamber of Commerce Christmas script drawing was held last Saturday afternoon on the courthouse south side. Winners include $50 Jayne Nelson. $25 Mary Vanderpool. $25 Jean Cerny. $10 Harold Thayer. Loyola Cerny. Wes Koehler. Nellie Dawes. Calmer Boden. Children’s Toys Terry Van derpool and Debbie Burritt. Additional drawings of $150 in script are scheduled for December 13 and December 20 after the free movie and Santa visit. Re registration is required each week as previous names are destroyed after each drawing.
Osceola, led by Rob Sterup and Rich Hayes, battled East Butler in the 75 76 season opener. East Butler edged Osceola 57 55 in overtime after a late Osceola rally, with Mentink and Schott grabbing eight rebounds each and Hayes scoring 21. The OHL B team also lost to East Butler 39 25.
