The Omaha World-Herald plans a Sunday feature on Dr Charles W Jeffrey former Osceola resident benefactor of the Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Hospital now under construction. Robert Agee Herald writer Earl Bunker photographer and Ted Landale editor visited Osceola for four hours in November to collect notes and images for the magazine piece which explores Dr Jeffrey life affection for Osceola and Polk County.
Former neighbors held a surprise house warming for Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Lewis on Tuesday evening. A gift was presented and lunch was provided by the guests. Attending were families of Alfred and Fred Yungdahl, Ansel, Dale, and Wallace Fredrickson, Walter Berck, Gerald Holm, Bernice Ehn, and Beverly Schell. The Lewises recently moved to the Dr. R. O Peterson house south of the Methodist Church.
The Polk County Farm Loan Association of Osceola announced a six percent dividend. Over 100 Polk county farmers will receive checks totaling 2100 dollars. President Ernest E. Lees and secretary treasurer Avin M. Grubaugh cited the dividend from the Federal Land Bank of Omaha as the source. Directors include Lees, Arnold P. Fredrickson, Guildford Bryan and Herman Thelen.
Duane Johnson Osceola schools music instructor announces Grade School Operetta will be held in the school auditorium Tuesday December 21 at 8 00 p m The program includes Grade Chorus Tonette Band and other numbers concluding with the High School Madrigals
Josephine Christina Albertina Johnson born December 2 1871 in Smaland Sweden died November 25 at 82 in Osceola. She married Charles J Johnson December 1900 and lived on a Stromsburg farm then moved to Osceola in 1917. Survived by three children seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Funeral at Kepner Osceola December 3 with burial in Stromsburg cemetery.
Polk County ASC warns producers with farms without prior corn in 1952 53 or 54 to apply by January 15 1955 for new farm corn acreage allotments to qualify for price support or ACP payments in 1955. Marketing quotas do not apply. 1954 loan deadlines January 31 1955 and loan rates for wheat oats rye barley soybeans and sorghum are listed with contact persons Richard C. Sealey Leo Cockson and Victor F. Sterup.
Postmaster Fred W. Schumann announces the Osceola Post Office will stay open in the afternoons for the next two Saturdays to assist patrons during the Christmas rush. The office normally closes at 12 30 p m on Saturdays.
Polk County residents may get free chest X-rays to detect tuberculosis via the Nebraska transportable unit in Polk County until December 22. Open to ages 12 and up, the one minute test requires no clothing removal. In Osceola the unit will operate December 10 to 16 at Consumers Building with daily hours 9 to 12 and 1 to 5, except December 13 afternoon hours.
St Vincent Church annual parish Christmas party set for Sunday December 12 at 8 p m in the parish hall. Numerous society and club gatherings follow through December 17 including St Andrew Holy Name Society St Vincent Holy Name Garden Club Climbers NEBC Club F A N Project Club Royal Neighbor Lodge Maple Leaf Club Beulah Cemetery Society with hostesses, lunch, and gift exchanges.
Land parcels totaling 120 acres in the Adolph Clobes estate sold at the courthouse sale. The improved 40 acre tract brought 278.50 per acre to buyer Wallace Logan. The 80 acre improved farm sold to Edmund and Otto Bernt for 253.00 per acre.
A neighborhood get acquainted party was held at the home of Mrs Earl Miley Monday evening with Mrs Fred Bond as assisting hostess. New residents Mrs Algor Larson and Mrs Ray Svoboda were introduced. A dessert coffee followed at 8:00. Bingo awarded a prize to Mrs Floyd Hartson. Neighbors present included Mesdames Kenneth Schmidt Harold Klingman Floyd Hartson Jim Fredin Robert Grossnicklaus DeVern Rodene Joe Fjell Wm DeLand J D Scott Wilbur Le Suer George Malek Eldena Johnson and Lula Burns.
The High Prairie Farm Bureau unit will meet on December 14 for its annual Christmas program and party. A report of the state convention will be given and all members are urged to attend. the gathering starts at 8 00 p m.
LaVern Richards son of Mr and Mrs Morris L Richards of Osceola is named a member of Pi Gamma Mu an honorary society promoting high scholarship in social sciences He is a junior at Nebraska Wesleyan University and was chosen for having twenty hours or more in social sciences with at least a 2 167 honor average He also participates in band Barbs IRC Kappa Kappa Psi opera and YMCA.
Vernon D. Boden of Osceola and Dale R. Peterson of Polk volunteered for service in the United States armed forces and were forwarded to the induction station in Omaha on December 7.
Mr and Mrs Eli Johnson were injured when their 1949 Plymouth overturned on the York Polk county line two miles west of Highway 81. Sheriff Willard Cornell and York County Sheriff Louis Eckert reported Mrs Johnson had bruises and a scalp laceration while Mr Johnson suffered critical injuries including broken ribs and multiple lacerations. The accident occurred about 5 30 p m Tuesday. both were taken to Stromsburg hospital in serious condition.
Norma Jean Ferris was honored at a miscellaneous shower held at Fairview hall on Saturday evening November 27. Fifty guests attended. the honoree seated beneath a red and white umbrella as gifts were opened and games played. Lunch was served by hostesses Glade Wyman Gladys Gaedeke Della Mae Schott Ella Wisely Blanche Larson and Ida Sandin.
Osceola opened the basketball season at home last Friday by defeating Clay Center 50 to 39 in the varsity game and 51 to 24 in the reserve. LeRoy Dinges led Osceola with 23 points, Jan Grossnicklaus added 15, and Buchtel topped Clay Center with 24 points. Santa Claus visits Saturday December 11 at 2 30 p m with treats in the courthouse lobby.
Mary Alexa Smith died December 2 1954 in Chicago Heights Illinois aged 94. She married James M Inness in 1886 and lived near Shelby before moving to Osceola. Survived by granddaughter Marjory Inness Kempster and three sisters. Service held December 5 at Kepner Funeral Home with Osceola cemetery interment.

Mrs Bethel King of Polk visited the Hastings home on Monday as a caller to Mr and Mrs R N Hastings.
Osceola hosts a radio bowling tourney starting Friday with a week of broadcasts on Sundays from 2 to 3 PM. The men's team features Vic Sterup Delmar Johnson Harry Sterup Mim Peterson Ford Bond and Todd Graves as sponsor. A Polk County women’s team also competes and has topped the series in five weeks.
