Polk County Students at State University

Twenty nine Polk County students join 6546 at University of Nebraska this term. Osceola has twelve, Stromsburg ten, Shelby six, Polk one. Names span three towns with majors in agriculture, engineering, law, medicine, and teaching, including two Herrmans and several Phi members. Foreign and diverse out-of-state entries reflect a cosmopolitan enrollment.

Obituary and community notes from Stromsburg

Funeral services for Mrs. O W Wickberg were held at Eden Baptist Church with Rev W E Hedburg officiating. She died at 63 after illness and is survived by husband two sons two daughters and two sisters. Interment was at Stromsburg cemetery. Weekend visitors included Stanton Moore Wallace Strong and Ruel Sward. Community events featured a Man On The Street broadcast by Lyle DeMoss and K F A B with local decorations for the holidays.

Thanksgiving Visitors Fill Shelby Homes Across Town

Residents from Lincoln, Omaha, Grand Island and nearby towns visited family in Shelby over Thanksgiving. Charles Carrol and Leslie Ward from Tamora spent the holiday with Mamie Carrol. the Hedburg and Beebe families hosted guests in Shelby and Omaha. Other visitors included Mr. and Mrs. Weber of Seward, the Goetz family, Dr. and Mrs. Kinney in Albion, and Miss Arbuck staying in Fairmont to care for a ill brother.

Quiet York wedding ties Wessel to Flick couple

Miss Wilma Wessel daughter of Mr and Mrs John Wessel of Bradshaw became the bride of Morris Flick son of Mrs Gertrude Flick of Polk community in a Court House ceremony conducted by Judge John L Riddell. The couple planned a short trip to Atlantic Iowa then would reside on a Polk area farm.

Carlson Anniversary Observed At Home Celebration

About 30 guests gathered Sunday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Carlson to honor their fifteenth wedding anniversary. Out of town attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Carlson and Miss Doris Stone from Crete, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur N. Johnson from Central City, and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Walgren from Benedict. Mrs. Clarence Walgren gave a gift from the guests and refreshments were served.

The Frileseha group celebrated its first council fire with membership cards awarded on Monday November 30 at guardian Mrs. Monkman’s home. Next week they plan beading headbands and earning honor beads.

Polk Shostrom Lind Wedding at Home of Bride

The marriage of Miss Marjorie Shostrom and Lloyd Lind was solemnized at noon on Thanksgiving Day November 26 at the bride’s parents’ Polk home. Reverend E E Pengelly officiated with Irene Shostrom and Clifford Carlson as attendants. Winnie Lind sang as guests enjoyed a yellow and white reception. The couple, both Polk High School graduates, will reside on a farm north of Polk.

Oil Men Organize County Group in Osceola

Wholesale and retail dealers and employees of Polk County met at the Court House in Osceola last Wednesday evening and formed a county organization to seek fair taxes and legislation for Nebraska motorists and suppliers. Officers chosen include Chairman Harry W Pratt and Secretary C T Moline with a legislative committee led by Julius Bernt and E J Thompson. Public Relations duties were assigned to R J Allison Jim Gibbons and Hubert Thelen with F S Henline as assistant secretary of the state committee.

Barr Solomon Wedding at Columbus Courthouse

Allen E. Barr of Shelby and Miss Alice M. Solomon of Silver Creek were married by Judge Speice in his Columbus courthouse office on Saturday. The bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Solomon of Silver Creek, witnessed the ceremony. The couple will reside in Shelby where Barr works as a truck driver.
