J H Sturdevant of St Paul dies Monday at Howard County Hospital after being found on his bed with no fire in the room for three days. He kept a frugal life. his clothing reveals cash and assets totaling about 6 175 in Lands and 472 78 in cash. An administrator will settle his affairs.
Blair rescuers labored at the Old Muddy Sunday site Tuesday removing only the car roof from the submerged 1955 Buick. Authorities doubt any body is inside while the Missouri River mud clings to the vehicle.
The 4 H heifer bought by Evelyn Friedeman produced twins twice and another bull calf, totaling five calves in 22 months. First twins on January 28, 1954, then one bull calf last December, and another twin birth on November 12. The event is reported by The Wymore Arbor Day.
A fire last Tuesday night gutted the Bogus residence in East Ashland while the John Bogus family, including four children, were inside. Much clothing and equipment suffered smoke damage though some items were salvaged. children's clothing upstairs was lost.
Tekamah resident Le Roy Ohle drove into the Mathiesen Building in Blair at about 12 30 Friday afternoon. His car jumped a curb struck a brick pillar causing more than 500 in damage. He left the scene and was charged with hit and run and fined 50 by Blair Enterprise.
Mr. and Mrs. Goldie Johnson and family of Poole Nebr and Mr. and Mrs. Chas Johnson were hosted belated Thanksgiving at the Carl Allinder home. Mr. and Mrs. Chas Danher of David City visited Mr. and Mrs. Ray Svoboda Sunday.
Safety Patrol records indicate radar checks have reduced speeding violations in Polk and Butler counties over two years. Speeds in 70 mphand above have declined to the low and middle 60s, with 192 violations recorded since April 7, 1955. The new point law, revoking licenses after 12 points for one year, has cut infractions, while regulations on tractor lighting are now enforced after sunset.
Polk County Teachers held a regular meeting Monday evening November 21 at Osceola High School Auditorium. John Johnston president led the session with minutes and treasury report read. The Executive Committee was enlarged to eight members including four rural and four city teachers. Johnston and Mr Classen are NS EA delegates to Lincoln December 9 10. Music by Osceola High School girls sextette and trio. Speaker was Mrs Erica Pommeranz Stromsburg. Next meeting February 20 at Shelby High School.
Cora A Headstrom and others transfer all of Lot 2 and parts of Lots 1 and 3 in Block 2 of the original town of Stromsburg to Edsel C Carlson. Victor J Johnson and wife transfer Lot 10, Block 3, Original Village of Polk to Donavin F Widge.
A list of volunteers departed for military service in Omaha. Names include Carl V. Samuels Clark, Richard B. Combs Stromsbury, Harl L. Hennings Gresham, and Robert J. Wyman Silver Creek.
Mr and Mrs John Kubicek Sr of Columbus celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday November 13 with a dinner for 100 at Shelby Parish Hall. They were married November 14 1905 in Brainard and have eleven living children. A reception followed with music by Ed Stanek of Brainard and relatives from multiple nearby towns attending.
Cub Scout Pack at St. Vincents Church held a November meeting with talent acts led by master of ceremonies LaVerne Miller. Performances included vocal duets by Steve Johnson and Joe Eikenhorst and by Don Eklund and Terry Senn, a poem by Craig Monson, a wrestling match, mandolin and drum solos, and group singing led by Joe Roberts. Awards featured Land Rush badges for Nicky Zedicher, Paul Carlson, Ricky Ekstrom, and Larry Dean Miley, plus Bear badges for Nicky Zedicher and Paul McKeag and a silver arrow for Nicky Zedicher. The next meeting is December 30 at the Lutheran church basement.
A pre campaign meeting for the March of Dimes was held at the McCloud Hotel York with Edith Heilman announcing 1956 preparations. Ted Hughes and Clinton Belknap attended along with leaders from Polk Seward Butler York and other counties as the drive gears up for the January campaign. Leo Larson of Stromsburg is named Polk County Campaign Director with district leaders named in each town and nine square mile rural districts to organize fundraising.
The Legion Auxiliary gathers Thursday December 1 at 1 30 in the legion club rooms to tie quilts for needy veteran families. PEO hosts Mrs George Inness Wednesday December 7. VFW Matheson Arnold Post 4998 and Auxiliary meet Monday December 5 at 8 p m in Stromsburg hall with social hour and lunch. Maple Leaf Extension Club entertained at Mrs Joe Schott home Thursday December 8 at 1 pm for a 50c Christmas gift exchange and a 10 cent article to bring.
Osceola defeated its longtime rival David City 55 to 38 in the season opener. Dinges led Osceola with 22 points while Davis topped David City with 16 points. The Reserve game ended 50 to 25 in favor of David City.

Mr and Mrs Joe Sullivan and Richard of Grand Island were Thanksgiving dinner guests of Mrs Sullivan's mother Mrs R N Hastings.
Osceola's high school band will travel to Genoa next Wednesday December 7 to take part in the annual Band Clinic. Guest conductor will be Donald Lentz from the University of Nebraska band.
The Osceola Men's Chorus, formed last year under Duane Johnson, performed four numbers at the Osceola Chamber of Commerce monthly meeting. Mrs. Duane Johnson accompanied. solo by Mrs. Johnson. Members include Ted Johnson Elmer Johnson Matt Anderson Dick Merrick Carl Cederberg and others.
The Columbus Apollo Club directed by Kenneth A. Johnson will stage its annual Christmas program at 8 p m on Friday December 9 in Kramer High school auditorium. The all reserved seat event offers a tuneful variety of secular sacred and carol music with reservations at Miessler's Bookstore in Columbus.
Osceola residents now of Polk announce a daughter born November 25 at Stromsburg hospital weighing nine pounds three ounces. The Bergers also have two sons. Ray Wagner and wife announce their third daughter Carolyn Lucille born November 23 at Stromsburg hospital weighing nine pounds.
The Osceola Chamber of Commerce outlines Christmas events led by President Martin Roberts. Santa arrives December 10 at 2 PM on courthouse square with candy and a chamber sponsored train ride. A free Muse Theatre show is set for December 17 with short holiday features and a feature film.
The November meeting of the St. Andrew and St. Vincent Altar Societies elected officers for the coming year. St. Andrew ladies choose Mrs. Hubert Bernt as president with Mildred Hahn as secretary and Mrs. Alfred Bernt as treasurer. St. Vincent Altar Society names Mrs. Leo Albers president, Mrs. Hubert Alt vice president, Mrs. Glen Wobig secretary, and Mrs. Ray Schott treasurer.
The Nash family said goodbye at a farewell dinner in Ord before moving to Osceola where Mr. Nash will become administrator of the Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Hospital. The event drew hospital board members doctors and local families who praised the Nash era and wished them well.
