Smut Takes Another Big Toll on Wheat Crop
A 1928 wheat market survey shows 24 percent of Omaha wheat smutty, docking 2 to 15 cents per bushel. One day’s market reported 1 percent smut, totaling about 3500 dollars in losses. Overall, smut reduces yield and profits, with farmer losses around seven thousand dollars in a single marketing day. Seed treatment with copper carbonate costs under a nickel per bushel and can be done quickly. Lincoln Agricultural College and partners will support seed treatment initiatives this fall.
