As the Polk County Fair runs this week, a noon rainstorm reduced afternoon attendance on Tuesday. Despite the weather, the exhibits appear large and high quality and the entertainment lineup is among the best ever showcased at the fair.
Mr and Mrs Hugo DeBere of El Monte California arrived Tuesday to visit friends and relatives. Leo Larson is painting the Heitz man brothers house. Mr and Mrs Andrew Meyer of Silver Creek and John Meyer and children of Camas Washington called at the Joe Karges home Friday afternoon. John Meyer is a brother of Mrs Karges. Mrs C R Carlson and Mrs Carl Helms were Stromsburg callers Monday. Mr and Mrs C L Dake and Rex called Sunday at the Joe Karges home.
The Farm Security Administration and the Farm Credit Administration loan programs merge into a new Farmers Home Administration within 90 days of August 14. The consolidated agency will provide rehabilitation and purchase loans, extend farm homes financing, and expand on the farm guidance services especially aiding returning veterans and disabled veterans with combined pensions. The move consolidates offices and may eliminate regional offices by mid 1947.
Lynn Brigham visited DeKalb Illinois to see the DeKalb Agricultural Association seed corn breeding program. He noted extensive inbreeding and crossing, 41000 hand pollinations this season, and over 7000 corn varieties under study for next year. The trip also covered poultry research using similar breeding methods to improve chickens.
Polk County farmers attend a terrace demonstration at Art Deeter’s farm. Three terrace styles were shown using equipment from Jim Branting Implement Co Stromsburg International Harvester Polk County Implement Osceola and Reece Farm Equipment Osceola. County Agent J Carder Throckmorton discusses basic principles as Ray Pierson outlines moisture conservation plans. Oliver Implement Osceola showcases the Roto tiller drawing keen interest.
Farmers attended a septic tank and disposal field demonstration on the Raymond D Johnson farm with Polk County Extension Service support. The event, using rental molds at 3.00 per setting, showcased cement form use and on site construction in about three hours. A follow up demonstration will be held at the Kinzli farm on Duncan road Friday August 30 inviting public attendance. Those planning fall use should register at the Extension Office to reserve rental dates.
The Jolly Homemakers 4-H Club held Achievement Day at leader Mrs. Harry McCaul ey's home with members and mothers present. Girls displayed their clothing projects while Jocelyn Imm and Dorothy Barker demonstrated hose laundering. Special guests included Mrs. Imhoff and daughter Mrs. Frank Frizell, Mrs. Henry Schipperiot and Eva Bute. A tasty lunch was served by the hostess and club members.
The W S C S of the Methodist Church held a 2 pm tea and reception for Mrs. L. M. Shaw celebrating her 80th birthday with many Women’s Society members, friends, and relatives attending. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. FE E Calvin and daughters Carol Nancy and Kay of Downey California and several Shaw family members from Omaha Lincoln Bassett and David City.
Polk residents host and visit relatives in a busy week of social events and business trips. Names include Clarence and Hennie Seymour, Harriet Bush, Jean Marie Lundberg, E T Lundberg, Emory Conner, Velda York, H Bush, Howard Smith, Ross Goethe, Glen and Will Green, James Green, Maurice Lindburg, Elwyn Johnson, Walter Green, Harlan Johnson, C E Penrose, Mervin Samuels, Berteis J Larson, George Larson, Will Miler, Neva Bright, and Mrs. Melvin Hill. A Des Moines hospital death, Bertin J Larson, is noted with funeral attendance.

Mrs. Joseph Swanson and Mrs. John Strom visited at the Mrs. A. B. Lind home with Swanson and Strom families from McPherson Kansas. Ernest Johnson joined relatives in Webster South Dakota. A buffet supper welcomed guests including Ella White Henry Ford Gerald Barker and Sander Peterson. Phillips returned from California and Idaho trips.
The Polk County Medical Society emphasizes that modern life forces children to read and work indoors under artificial light. It warns eyes endure overtime with little light and urges abundant, glare free, indirect lighting to protect the one lifelong pair of eyes.
Holdrege based Noble Drug Store owned by Mr and Mrs Irvin Noble received a certificate of merit from the International Association of Rexall Clubs. Son has owned the store for two years and local residents note the recognition.
A poem by Mrs. Elmer Allinder of Osceola area was judged best in a Wildfire Magazine issue. Prairie Wings Magazine awarded her a $2.00 Prairie Winds subscription as the top honor.
Miss Connie Dunn was honored at a miscellaneous shower at Valley Methodist Church on Friday August 23. About forty guests attended with pink and white decorations. Refreshments were served by hostesses Mrs. David Jones Mrs. Elmer Horst and Miss Roberta Johnson.
Mrs. Julia Wolnizek died at Arnold Nebraska at age ninety funeral services were held in Arnold then the body brought to Shelby for burial her husband and one son had died earlier she was formerly Julia Scholz daughter of Louis Scholz of this city now visiting in California
The weekly hospital notice lists admissions in medical care for Joe Schott and Jerry Pritchard with Robert Dunn, Mrs. F. Reisdorff, Mrs. Otto Fleming. obstetrical cases for Mrs. M. Gabel and Mrs. Sheldon Bond. newborn Edmund David Gabel and Shelly Jean Bond. surgical patients include Mrs. M. Ranscom and Roberta Egly. discharges include Joe Schott and Mrs. F. Reisdorff.
Greens Chapel Virgil Hennings and Clair Obrist returned home recently after Navy discharges. Local gatherings included several family visits and weekend trips as residents hosted relatives and friends from Tennessee Indiana Oregon Washington and California. A Jolly Workers meeting was postponed indefinitely.
