Polk County's annual fair opens with large crowds, especially at the county school exhibit described as among the best. Harness racing returns to the track and more than 40 horses are on the grounds. A bucking buffalo contest offers a $25 purse and the midway features renewed rides alongside new devices for all ages.
Directors plan a $250 000 rural electrification project to serve about 500 farm homes in Polk County Nebraska. They will apply for a loan from the Rural Electrification Administration led by Morris L. Cooke. The district, the smallest in the state, aims to build 200 miles of lines at low rates starting around 3.50 per consumer. Mrs. James Farris Phoebe Jane Bull born in Canada in March 1857 died August 23 1935 at 77 years five months and 21 days. She was the eldest daughter of Stephan and Margaret Bull and married J F Farris on June 24 1879, with eight children born to the union. Funeral services were conducted at the First Methodist Church in Osceola with interment in Osceola Cemetery. Rev W H Wright presiding.
Reverend and Mrs Paul Melin returned home this week from Hartford South Dakota where they spent several days and had taken Mrs Melin's mother after a visit here.
Osceola and nearby towns feature Sunday and Monday visits, family reunions, weddings, and school duties. Families from Palmer, Central City, York, Benedict, and Stromsburg attend gatherings, while Miss Helen Marvin marries Lee Knolle at Greenwood and plans residence in Plattsmouth. A seven pound girl Demaris Nadine arrives to Donald and family.
The county announces the 1966-67 school year begins Monday September 2 in all rural and city schools. Miss Jeannette Vivian Anderson and Rev. Earl O. Widen wed at 4 30 Saturday afternoon in Stromsburg Nebraska in a double ring ceremony read by Rev. Anton Sjoland. Guests included family from Minneapolis and Stromsburg as well as Osage and Lincoln connections. The couple will reside in Isanti Minnesota after a brief wedding trip.
Baseball fans are promised a fine game as the Yellow Jackets from the state capitol face the Osceola club at the fair grounds next Sunday September 1. This fast negro aggregation has shown strong play in superior competition.
A three thousand dollar vial of radium, thrown away, was traced from Moe Hospital to a dump grounds and then found in the stomach of a pig. Dr. A J Moe and Dr J W Buchta led Minnesota scientists in a five group search until the tiny tube was located in the animal’s stomach.
Funeral services for Fredrick Franken Ware 81 were held at the Osceola Presbyterian Church with Rev. W H Wright officiating. Interment followed in Osceola Cemetery. Ware, longtime Nebraska resident born near Farlington Iowa, died in his sleep after a yearlong decline ten months after his wife’s death. He left five children and seven grandchildren.
Hospital notes report several patients at Osceola Hospital. A daughter born August 26 to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Wieseman. Junior Hotchkiss underwent tonsil removal by Dr. R. L. Schroeder. Mrs. Grant Walgren discharged after operation by Dr. Schroeder. Virgil McCormick had major surgery by Dr. Schroeder. Mrs. Clyde Smith and son Dick visited Lincoln relatives.
The Osceola Record launches a regional reader incentive offering $3,500 in cash prizes to readers and residents. Entrants receive 11,000 votes at start with coupons and subscriptions driving more votes. Campaign runs for a short period with a prize pool distributed by judges based on total votes.
Burlington railroad will award prize trips to the 1936 Club Week to about 70 outstanding Nebraska 4-H club leaders. L I Friabie announced the plan through the College of Agriculture. One local leader per county along the railroad will win a round trip to Lincoln plus a quarter of registration for Club Week held in June. Eligible leaders must hold one certificate of achievement and one award of appreciation by December 1. Previous Burlington winners are ineligible.
The Polk county 4 H recreation committee reported strong attendance at the annual 4 H club picnic held at City Park in Osceola last Friday. About 130 people attended with roughly half being 4 H members and the rest parents siblings leaders and committee members. A highlight was home made ice cream prepared on site using freezers and ice cream supplies.
The annual Polk County W C T U convention will meet Thursday September 5 with a full program. Devotionals, welcome and response, business sessions, reports from officers, election of officers, parsonage quartet, ministers symposium, liquor laws briefing, memorial service, readings, musical numbers, and an address by John Oberg Osceola followed by benediction.
Sam C. Stoner, a Los Angeles resident and former Osceola resident, and his wife were in a car overturn near Auburn last Wednesday night. Mrs. Stoner escaped with minor bruises, while Mr. Stoner was treated at Bryan Memorial Hospital after relatives from Milford transported him.
Last Sunday Stromsburg hosted the game after wet fields forced a move and a washout for the locals. The score stood 2 to 0 with five hits recorded, and both sides displayed notable fielding and pitching despite the poor conditions.
