Polk County Commissioners approved the 1947 48 fiscal year budget totaling 221977 across all funds. The mill levy was cut to 3.86 from 4.40 last year though local town and school district levies rise to cover higher operating costs and a record high state levy.
The 68th Polk County Fair ended amid heat curtailing exhibits but praised as a success by President Sam Crouse with strong attendance and top recognitions in 4-H, dress revue, and baking. Osceola schools announce September 1 opening with new staff, curriculum changes, and facility updates for the 1947-48 year.

J W Elwood 72 died Thursday August 21 at Omaha Methodist hospital after two months as a patient. Survived by four sons Rex B Harold Willard Wayne in Poland and two daughters Louise Pollard. Also survived by two sisters Miss Blanche Elwood Mrs Albert Ryan and two brothers Dr Elwood and Alfred Elwood. A Polk County landowner, he had long resided in Omaha. Funeral was held Saturday in Omaha with burial at Forest Lawn cemetery.
The 4 H Junior Fair delivered strong showings across dairy beef pigs and crops with 131 blue ribbons 122 red and 105 white awarded from 485 entries. Grand Champion beef steer went to Jimmy Larson and Reserve Champion to Richard Peterson, both shown by Top Notchers 4 H Livestock club led by Paul Monson. Awards went to multiple 4 H members across Hereford Angus Shorthorn Swine Sheep and crops contests and a five section 4 H Parade concluded the event. OSCEOLA LOSES CLOSE GAME TO YORK BRAVES The Osceola ball club lost 7 to 8 to the York Braves after a late surge, with Red Neujahr securing the win for York.
Emil G Hernbloom aged 73 died at his Osceola home on August 19 1947 after a long illness. A son of Gustaf and Helen Hernbloom he came to this county as a child and lived here 68 years. He leaves two sisters Mrs Teckla Larson and Pearl Hernbloom and one nephew Wm H Larson of Marion Indiana. Funeral services were held August 22 at Kepner Funeral Home Osceola with Rev G A Randall officiating and burial at Stromsburg Cemetery.

The annual Peter Peterson family reunion gathered 74 of 125 members at Buckley Park Stromsburg. Luncheon guests at Ray Stover’s included Julian Freeman of York and families from Lincoln Stockton and others.
Baseball fans in Stromsburg will see former star catcher Mickey Owen of the St. Louis Cardinals and Brooklyn Dodgers play for Stromsburg against Geneva. The 8:30 p.m. game at Buckley Park will feature Owen, regarded as one of the great catchers, in an exhibition-like matchup next Sunday night.
Mrs. Viola Kirtley Kennedy died August 21 in Ames Iowa where she lived for eight years She visited Osceola with Walter Kirtley family Survived by husband mother and many siblings Remains shipped to Lincoln for burial.
The Polke County Artificial Insemination Association announced prize winners from the Birthday Guessing Contest held at the County Fair. First prize goes to Mervin Ransom Sr of Shelby for $5, second Edna Peterson of Osceola for $3, third Robert Dickson for $2. the twice calf born May 31 at 5 00 AM belongs to Lavelle Lamoree of Osceola, a director of the Association. Over 800 ballots were cast.
Bert L. Myers aged 67 died Saturday at an Omaha hospital after heart illness. He had lived in Osceola six years and worked for Polk County Implement Company. Survived by daughter Mrs. Russell Kries, four grandsons, one granddaughter. Funeral at Stromsburg Methodist Church with burial in Stromsburg cemetery.
Elvin Loring Marquis born Newton Iowa November 13 1866 died Stromsburg August 19 1947 at age 80. He married Hattie Merscheim 1891 and Amelia Merscheim 1910. had three daughters Faye Emmons Vern Burke Josephine Wingers. Funeral by Rev G A Randall in Stromsburg with interment Osceola cemetery.
Several Polk 4 H club members earned premiums at the county fair last week. Shirley Stevens took first in a judging contest, Sheralee Hill was second or red winner, Sondra Hill earned third. Demonstrations earned blue ribbons for Sondra Hill and red for Marilyn Hahn and Sheralee Hill. LaVonne Anderson Harriet Bush and Marlene Anderson won white ribbons. Carlyn Strand and Gwenda Faye Ramp earned red for a team demonstration Washing Dishes.
