Women plan to attend the Motion Picture Cooking School “Star in My Kitchen” at NEW MUSE THEATRE Osceola Nebraska September 15 to 17. The free show demonstrates modern home making with stage close-ups, recipes, and tips on left overs laundry and time saving.
On August 11 Polk County held the Health Contest for all county youths under State rules. Contestants must be 15 by January 1, 1938. Osceola doctors Alliband Wurtz and Olson provided exam services. County champions are Marjorie Glasser and Martin Kresha, who will compete at the state fair.
Polk County Nebraska Board of County Commissioners says delinquent personal taxes will be deducted from warrants of claimants. The board will strictly follow statutes after recent taxpayer protests.
The notice invites all members to attend the 10 a m Sunday School next Sunday and asks them to bring a friend.
Polk county fair presses ahead despite heat as club and school displays draw attention. Officials hope warmer weather boosts attendance while admission remains minimal and Gibbs and Son return with rides for all ages.
At a referee sale the estate of Frank Largan was ordered liquidated and 760 acres in Polk County were sold as a unit. Mrs. Johanna Larson purchased the entire tract for 49600 dollars, with one 120 acre section selling for 40 dollars an acre and the remaining parcels fetching 60 to 75 dollars per acre.
Winona Olson became the bride of Leroy Nelson at 8 30 p m August 6 at the Olson home Stromsburg with 75 guests Rev Gust E Carlson officiating. The reception followed and the couple plans to live on a farm near Stromsburg after a wedding trip.
A chain of visits unfolds as Mr. and Mrs. A G Scofield and son from Lincoln stop in Shelby on the way home from Central City. Thelen family of Fordland Missouri brings grandchildren for a Shelby visit and Mrs Thelen returns home with Belle Taddiken and Hubert George Thelen planning a Fordland stay. Prof John Dunning and family from New York City arrive to visit in Shelby. Terence Duren departs for Central America then Cleveland School of Art in Ohio.
Polk County officials announce a long standing law will be enforced. Delinquent personal taxes will be deducted from warrants before issuance. Warrants will not be issued until ten days after the board's meeting.
Osceola High School class of 1913 held a Sunday reunion at the Presbyterian Church parlors. Dinner was served at noon. The afternoon featured old papers and remembrances, with vocal solos by Mrs. Vera Harvey and Leon Merrick. A memorial service honored Alvin Campbell. Out-of-town attendees included J. W. Buchta, Arthur Mickey, Miss Emma Snyder, Dr. H. E. Harvey, Orrin Jenner, Miss Florence Miller.

The Polk County W C T U convention will be held at the Osceola M E Church on Tuesday August 30 1938. The program includes devotions reports officers election memorials luncheon and various musical numbers with Rev Oberg Rev Hamilton Miss Olive McBeth and Miss Margaret Anderson among the speakers and participants. The public is invited to all sessions.
The Miriam Chorus will sing at a Sunday service in Swede Home Church. Local residents visit relatives in Omaha and Minnesota. A wedding between LaVina Swanson and Kenneth Mentink is noted. Various families host guests from out of town and celebrate anniversaries. A Mix and Stir Cooking Club picnic is reported. Rodney and Mrs. Roberts announce a new baby boy born August 18 in Lincoln.
Sunday School at 10 00 a m led by El ton Berck. Sermon at 11 00 a m titled Jesus Attitude toward Work and the Worker. League services at 7 00 p m. Nebraska Annual Conference meets at First Church Omaha September 6 13. Albert C Monkman is pastor.
Rev. and Mrs. Monson of St. John s Church in Rock Island Illinois visited Osceola with Rev. and Mrs. John Oberg. Mrs. Deland Erma and Mrs. Rosland with Mrs. Weaver traveled to Wahoo to visit Ida Nelson and help Ethel Nelson celebrate her birthday. The Merricks brought home Mrs. F E Merrick from Lincoln after ten days with her daughter Mrs. Banks. Larry Lambe moved from the Mabel Thompson property in south Osceola to the Melvin Pearson residence.
The Polk City Band receives an invitation from the Aurora Chamber of Commerce to join with Aurora and York bands for a Thursday evening concert in Aurora on August 25. The Polk City Band has statewide recognition for its quality, contrasting with nearby towns adopting canned music. The band recently played at the Osceola county fair, under director Robert Strickland.
Miss LaVina Swanson married Kenneth Mentink Saturday night at Swanson MENTINI home church Osceola. The ceremony featured Lohengrin's Wedding March and Mendelssohn music with floral decor and a peach satin maid of honor. A reception followed at the bride's home and the couple left for a wedding trip, to reside on a farm south of Osceola.
Howard Peterson will preach at Wesley Chapel on Sunday morning. A church festival is planned for September 2 with Ralph Copenhauser, recreation director, attending and a chicken supper served from 5 30 to 7 30 P M.
The will dispute over the Charles J. Peterson estate, valued at about 50 000 to 60 000 dollars, was postponed indefinitely by Judge L S Hastings. Peterson died November 13 1936 in Stromsburg leaving distant relatives and beneficiaries including Stromsburg city and school district churches and relatives in Sweden. Elmer Nordlund of Stromsburg serves as executor with E H Feldt of Lincoln appealing County court probate actions.
Mrs Ralph Masselbach and children returned home from Wyoming after a visit with relatives. Mr and Mrs O J Kropach accompanied them home from New Castle Wyoming to visit their daughter Mrs Louis Swan. John Konzack of Ayr Nebr spent the weekend with John Storoscik. Ed Jenkins of Sibley Ia visits relatives. Iona Eller spent a week visiting Omaha and David City. Nels Hiasselbach and Hans Ernst drove to Cordova on business. School Board District 68 works on school building repairs this week. Vincent Messing returned from Spalding after visiting relatives. Holger Nelson hosted a birthday picnic for his 60th. Julius Nebosis Walter and Mildred Platte Center guests in the Bernt homes. Oswald Bernt and family and Elizabeth Schnider visited John Gable in Stromsburg. Rev W Beranak learned Lincoln transfer to Touhy and will depart Sept 12 for that place. Rev John Mattie, Hastings assistant pastor, will come to St Andrews.
Jay Buchta of St Paul Minnesota arrived here last Wednesday for several days visit with his parents Mr and Mrs John Buchta and other relatives.
Beverly Johnson daughter of Mr and Mrs Vic Johnson of Osceola was chosen Little Miss Polk County at the Polk County Fair opening Tuesday evening. Fern Marie Myers Polk was runner up and Joan Taddiken Shelby placed third. A program of amateur selections followed the candidates as the last performer appeared close to 11 o clock, showing Polk County abundance of talent.
Virginia Lucille Torell and Vera Berck married at 4 pm Sunday August 21 in Greens Chapel. Rev L M Albrecht officiated before about fifty guests. The bride wore her mother’s satin lace gown, carried daisies and wore a family heirloom bracelet. Attendants included Beverly Hennings and Quentin Torell. music by piano and vocalists. The couple will live on a farm near Marquette after visiting Bentonville Arkansas.
Ramona Schott had an appendectomy last Friday. Jennie Lou Buchta and Joe Marsden both underwent appendectomy and tonsil removal respectively this week. Mr Brandt, Mr and Mrs Lawrence Bowe welcomed Geraldine Ruth a six pound daughter at the hospital. Doctors Hickens and Hamila of Omaha led the operations and recovery noted as satisfactory.
Mr and Mrs W W Norton and their sons spent the weekend at Lake Erikson enjoying leisure time by the water and family togetherness.
