Polk County Fair Concludes After Busy Week
The Polk County Fair ended Wednesday night as organizers called it one of the toughest yet most satisfying fairs. Carnivals struggled with Nebraska gambling bans, but local exhibits and junior livestock, flower and school displays drew praise. Osceola beat Shelby, Geneva defeated Osceola in a junior game, and Stromsburg Schuyler results awaited. Hot Rod races drew large crowds with two hours of thrills. Local businessmen assisted with ticketing while Osceola Polk Stromsburg and Stromsburg bands provided music.

Wreck near Shelby damages vehicle in noon crash
A two mile east of Shelby at noon Monday a large semi struck the rear of a state maintainer at work, breaking the maintainer’s rear axle and tearing the front from the trailer. The truck driver was taken to Osceola for observation and treatment of possible chest injuries and broken ribs. Dr. Eklund attended the scene and Kepner Ambulance transported the injured man to hospital.

Obituary for Alfred Grossnicklaus of Osceola
Alfred Christopher Grossnicklaus born October 13, 1887 northwest of Osceola died August 14 1950 at the Osceola hospital at age 62. He married Melita Dake in 1910 and Mary Wyman Myers in 1927. Survived by wife Mary daughter Alta Wieseman five siblings three grandchildren and a stepdaughter. Services were held at Valley Church with interment in Valley cemetery.

The Osceola post office will curtail mail service starting August 26. The Postal Department orders end of window service on Saturday afternoons, with Saturday hours from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Weekday window hours are reduced to 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., closing one half hour earlier than before.

Letter From Behind Iron Curtain Reaches Home
Mrs LeRoy Rhodes received an air mail letter Tuesday August 22 from her brother J W Buchta and his wife and two children touring Europe. The letter says they hoped the Iron Curtain would lift to permit entry and exit. Postmarked Vienna August 15 it arrived after Russian censorship. Fire Devastates Osceola South Square Fifty-Five Years Ago
Webster Mills recalls a blaze that destroyed the Osceola south side of the square last Tuesday in 55 years, starting in a bakery and lunch room near the current Malek's site and sweeping east and west. The Leonard's Recreation building halted the westward spread as all east buildings burned, including a bakery, lunch stand, hardware and implement business, barber shop, and a general store.
