Nina Burke, president of the Polk County Teachers Association, attended the fourth annual Leadership Conference of the Nebraska State Education Association at Kearney Teachers College August 7. The agenda covered Social Security provisions for teachers, collaboration for better schools, and teachers duties and responsibilities. A Chuck Wagon dinner and square dancing at Harmon Park closed the event.
Mrs. Wm Buhl and son Dean returned from a three week San Jose California trip to visit the Almens. Richard L Randall came home from Casper Wyoming where he trained with the Lincoln National Guards. Families from David City Madison Stromsburg and Stromsboro gather for visits and birthday celebrations. Dr Harriet B Randall and daughters Eleanor and Elizabeth visited Rev G A Randall after traveling to Europe for psychology meetings.

Craig Kindred six years old, son of Mr and Mrs Robert N Kindred of Omaha and grandson of Mr and Mrs Robert Sigler Sr of this city, is ill at Children s Memorial Hospital in Omaha with bulbar polio. He was taken to the hospital Sunday, August 7.
Mrs. Fred Bond hosted a Saturday coffee party honoring Ann Launer future bride of Dana Bond from Grand Island. Sunday guests included Mrs. Mark Timm and Mrs. A. J. Manthey with E A Schnasse and Miss Lydia Engelhardt. Others from York and Lincoln attended family visits, dinners, picnics, and birthday celebrations in Osceola and nearby communities before returning home.
The Polk County Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis invites the public to a meeting August 22 at eight in the District Court Room, Court House. The session will review nationwide polio vaccine progress and outline tentative plans for the 1956 March of Dimes campaign with hopes of State Representative attendance.
Jay McCormick formerly of Osceola and long time Silver Creek resident died August 12 at age 54 after illness. Funeral services were conducted at Fleming Funeral Home Silver Creek on Sunday afternoon with Rev. H. R. Weber officiating. Survived by widow Myrtle of Silver Creek, daughters Delores and Marilyn of Columbus, and son Raymond in the Navy.
A Sunday August 14 open house at Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Grossnicklaus home honored Mrs Minnie Weeden on her 80th birthday. About 155 relatives and friends attended with out of state guests from Wisconsin Minnesota Nebraska and Washington.
A collision at a rural highway intersection north of Kenneth Mentink corner on Highway 30A left Adolph Kresha Jr and his wife unconscious and hospitalized at Osceola Hospital with a broken arm, an injured leg, and shock. Bob Sterup and his son suffered facial injuries but were not hospitalized. The Sterup vehicle had a crushed front end and a near rollover incident narrowly missing the occupants.
Two Columbus softball teams with local league players face Osceola for back to back games this Friday and next Monday. Friday night August 19 features a Gas Company team at 8:00 p m. Monday August 22 hosts the Columbus Stockyards team at 8:00 p m.
Mr and Mrs Algot Larson announce the birth of a son on Monday August 8 at Stromsburg hospital. The baby weighs six pounds seven ounces and is named Dennis Ray.
Johnsons and Maleks lead the Osceola Softball League with five wins and one loss in the second half. High School and Watts trail, each with one win five losses and six straight losses respectively. A Norfolk tournament game is set for Sunday August 21 with a local team. Bernie Gissler seeks drivers for players. Batting averages highlight D Wright B Gissler Heimer Swan and others with several at .500 or near.
Nebraska drivers must renew licenses by September 1 1955 or risk violation. Licenses expire regardless of renewal status with mail renewals possible for 2 dollars plus personal details. A 60 day grace period follows with a special early renewal for ages 16 to 19.
The St Vincent Altar Society hosts husbands and families Monday at 8:00 PM in the Parish Hall. Each family brings pie and sandwiches to share. The event honors Mrs. Clare Howe on her birthday anniversary. Rebekah Lodge meets next Wednesday Aug 24 at 8:00 PM.
Osceola High School coach Bob Manley calls first football squad gathering for Monday August 22 at 6 00 pm in the school auditorium. A prior Friday night meeting August 19 will check equipment with an 8 30 pm start. Physicals run Monday morning August 22 from 9 00 to 11 00 at Dr John L Blodig office. New assistant coach Kenneth Sipes from Fairmont will join Manley as about 45 players report.
Pfc. Robert Earl Johnson stationed with the Air Force in Anchorage Alaska is spending a month’s furlough with his parents Mr and Mrs Roy Johnson and other relatives here.
The Valley Sunshine 4-H Club met at Gust Carlson's home on August 11 with all but one member present. The group discussed the county fair and achievement day, then shared lunch hosted by the hostess.
The Osceola Boy Scout troop led by Scoutmaster Sheldon Bond and Mark Gustafson camped at Lake Ericson from Friday noon to Sunday night with some members arriving Sunday. They rode to Burwell Saturday for the annual rodeo and used Lake Ericson’s cabin and boating and swimming facilities during their stay.
Forty three entries were made in the 4 H Dress Revue at the County Fair signaling strong interest in sewing and clothing selection. Grand champion ribbons went to Doris Swanson Stromsburg Davida Sundberg Stromsborg and Ann Kosch Shelby. Ann Kosch and Maribeth Powell will represent Polk county at the State Fair Dress Revue in the Simple Tailored and School Dress divisions respectively. Avis Waller and Patty Loveman will enter demonstration events on Snickerdoodle making and First Aid. Several girls will enter food clothing and homeliving articles at the State 4 H show.
