Thursday August 30th marks Republican Day at the Polk County Fair with Hon. Arthur Weaver, Nebraskas likely next chief executive, scheduled to address voters around two o’clock. Organizers tout his speaker appeal, expect a strong fair program, and urge visitors to attend.
George N Peek of Moline Illinois a plow manufacturer and critic of Hoover speaks for Smith while denying farmer advocacy. The quarrel traces back to WWI era war industries board with Redfield and a feud with Hoover that prompted Senator Sackett to call Peek remarks libelous misrepresentations.
HACKBERRY The Up Streamer Class will hold their annual picnic at Seward on Thursday. The Burl Fox family were Sunday dinner guests at the C. E. Hoffer home. Ed Nebergall of Mc Cook visited Monday at the W. E. Carter home. Foy Rosenberry shelled corn for Lawrence Hoffer Tuesday morning. Geraldine Davidson visited Tuesday at her grandmother Armagast's home. Maxine Davidson spent Tuesday with Lois Claypool. Leland Spaulding delivered the sermon at Wayland Sunday mornings. The Harry Obrist family were in Osceola Monday afternoon. Minnie Hoffer entertained the Victor Club at her home Wednesday. Mabel McKeag and Janice of York are visiting this week at the W. L. Obrist home.

St Pauls Lutheran Church announces an ice cream social hosted by the Luther League on Thursday at 8 PM with piano and organ duets, vocal solos, readings, and duets. July events include August 19 services with Swedish and English vespers, and Luther League gathering at the Johnson home near Osceola.

George Wells family visited Octavia relatives. P J Ball ill. Rasp family visited Elmer Rasp in Gresham. Cole family returned to Lincoln after several weeks in Shelby. Gladys Watkins accompanied them. Geraldine Miller visiting from Kansas City. Bonnie Watkins returned from Merino Colorado. Hattel family visiting Comstock. Camp Fire Girls camping at Seward.
A large Rufus Walker family reunion gathered at Buckley Park in Stromsburg on Tuesday August 14 with all children present. The gathering highlighted four generations including Mrs. Rufus Walker Mrs. Lee Greene Raitt and Betty Lee Raitt. Attendees listed include families from Osceola Shelby Omaha Carns and Los Angeles with C A Curtis reciting Picnic Sam by Will Carleton.
Local Saturday August 11 marked Dicky Merrick’s fourth birthday with a family gathering. Mr and Mrs Ben Farris and children visited Columbus and spent time with Mrs Dale Whitehed in the hospital where their son Dale Robert Jr was born August 9th. Osceola Chautauqua closed a six day session with steady crowds, though interest in continuing the event in Osceola appeared to wane.
Stromsburg residents and visitors share travels and gatherings from Lincoln to Denver. Families including Hedbloom, Eielson, and Pruitt signaled changes with new posts, while Bridge Luncheons honor Virginia Tucker and Ramon Headstrom as guests. A five coach train showcasing wheat growing and marketing methods arrives August 17 at the agricultural college. The Maple Leaf Club gathered at Mrs. Sarah Fineey’s residence on Thursday August 9 with 12 members and 5 visitors. After the business meeting a luncheon was served and plans were made to meet with Mrs. Lillian Eglehoff on August 23.

Myra Crozier preached at Friday’s church with Grace assisting, and Alvin Anderson and family attended a large reunion event.
The stolen Buick Sedan once owned by Alex Scott of Stromsburg was found near Shelby after a chase by Sheriff Van Hoosen and State Sheriff Condit. The suspects hid in Polk County but escaped capture by minutes. No arrests yet. possible developments expected. Scott’s car had logged over 7000 miles and showed hard use.
The Record highlights Osceola High School and its strong curriculum urging local parents to consider the school for their high school age children. A Junior Chautauqua event featured a rustic hobos breakfast in a pasture east of the schoolhouse with participants wearing patched clothes and carrying breakfast in hand kerchiefs. A three car mishap on the White Way near Osceola involved A L Dunn and wife from Grand Island in a Buick coupe, followed by Clarence Pierson and others in a Dodge sedan. A car driven by Smoke Johnson failed to stop, colliding with the Grand Island car and a third rear collision followed. no injuries were reported though bottles and a pint of hooch were found, with Johnson likely facing charges.
