Aphids Sweep Polk County Prompt spraying urged
Corn leaf aphids have reached emergency levels in Polk County this week. County agent Ken Krieg warns they can triple daily for the rest of summer and that leaf-area loss will hit yields. For severe outbreaks, spray with parathion per manufacturer directions, using drop nozzles and fine spray near plants. Parathion is highly toxic and fields should not be entered 3 to 4 days after spraying or used for 15 days. Infestations can reoccur, and predators like ladybugs may be killed.
