For the second time in three years a Wilber girl earned the Miss Lincoln title. Susanne Bartos, daughter of Mr and Mrs Stanley Bartos, is the most recent winner but is under eighteen and thus ineligible for Miss Nebraska.
In July, Boone County Community Hospital saw twelve births with seven girls and five boys. The report notes July is the largest birth month so far in 1954 for Albion News readers.
County Agent Sam Lingo reports that grasshoppers are a serious plague in alfalfa fields and are moving to damage adjacent corn and soybeans as fields are cut. The infestation appears widespread across the state and is described as the most severe since the late 1930s drought years.
A 15 year old Lexington youth was arrested early Sunday for driving without lights in the city, running three stop signs and speeding at 90 mph on Highway 23. He was stopped about 16 miles east of Lexington according to the Herald.
A 14 year old Blair boy employed by the city utilities department was nearly electrocuted when a 2300 volt line was severed by his shovel while working with a crew installing a new line near Blair city hall.
Burglars entered Farwell Coop Credit Association bank through a window and pried a vault door as they stole about 200 dollars. They damaged the safe, discovering inside around 6000 dollars in currency, but fled before opening the safe. Ben Cox Jr. remains in a Beatrice hospital after a farm accident left him partially paralyzed.
Two Sioux City Wall Street Mission Camp directors saved Jim Reed from drowning after a wave swamped a four boy boat at Crystal Lake. Reed, unable to swim, spent four minutes underwater before rescuers revived him.
Butler County voters rejected wheat marketing quotas by 400 to 277, with Nebraska leading the nation in no votes. The measure would require farms with grain wheat acreage cuts over 15 acres to follow government acreage abatements to obtain a marketing card and remain eligible for price supports.

August Carl Jaenicke born August 4 1876 in Piper City Illinois died July 30 in an Omaha Hospital. He lived near Dannebrog Nebraska before moving to Osceola where he farmed and started a family of five children two predeceased him. Funeral services were held in the Osceola Methodist Church with Rev Homer Bollinger officiating and interment at Osceola Cemetery.
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Gissler of Osceola were honored at a branch office picnic in Sioux City Iowa on July 23 for again being the leading producer of National Fidelity Life Insurance Company during the June for President Jones campaign. This is the second year running and he is among the ten leaders of the entire sales force per Branch Manager Clyde Laymon.
An inch of rain across Polk County, with Saturday hail at Osceola and heavier totals in the southeast, boosts corn prospects. Observers say rain improves moisture but may not fully insure the crop, though drought stress has lessened and frost remains a threat.
Mr and Mrs Delmar Frizzell and their son of San Jose California visited Mrs Dor McCormick. Luther League members gathered at Rest Manor Sunday evening and sang songs to the residents.
Triplets, all girls, were born to Mr. and Mrs. Delmar Alt of north of Shelby between 2:00 and 4:00 a.m. Saturday, July 31, at Osceola City Hospital. Names in birth order are Barbara Kaye, Beverly Kaye, and Becky Faye. The Alts’ previous child is Delma Jean, four.
Osceola prepares two final league games and a two inning all-player charity contest scheduled for August 19 with prizes from cash to merchandise. Local organizers Bernie Gissler and Lawrence Bowe invite prize contributions. The all-stars meet Bellwood at Osceola Park on August 9, and a World Herald Sports Review Team from Omaha visits August 15.
Congressman Carl T. Curtis told Osceola voters that high taxes deter Nebraskans from owning property during a Saturday night band concert address. The ranking Ways and Means Committee member campaigns for the Republican six year Senate term, urging tax reform at both state and national levels.

Miss Chris Ann Fudge married Howard C. Yarwood Jr at Grace Lutheran Church Omaha in a 3 p.m. ceremony witnessed by close family Rev Henry J Goode officiated The bride daughter of Mrs Wesley O Fudge wore white silk organza with colonial bouquet The groom is son of Mrs Howard C Yarwood Sr The couple will reside in Omaha after a wedding trip to Canada They previously lived in Osceola before moving to Omaha about 15 years ago
The Easter Seal Fund expands Nebraska aid with a home use equipment pool through the Omaha Parents Council on Cerebral Palsy and Other Handicaps. Volunteers from Beta Sigma Phi contributed labor and decorating, with Dr. J. P. Lord School supplies, to provide stand-up tables parallel bars and other therapy items on a loan basis. John Adams earned his Masters Degree in Music from the University last Saturday. He and his wife plan to move to Omaha in mid August where he will teach beginners band and orchestra in eight North Omaha schools. Family and visitors from Washington and Council Bluffs joined Mr and Mrs Fox and others for weekend events.
Nebraskans will vote next Tuesday August 10 in what is expected to be a light turnout due to few county race contests. Some contests will surface in the November general election. Sample ballots list county and local names while state races include six candidates for the late Senator Hugh Butler seat and 16 for the short term seat. Governor race features Frederick Wagener and Victor Anderson as top contenders. Polls open 8 am to 8 pm and Osceola wards vote at the courthouse lower lobby.
The final concert sponsored by Osceola schools the city and the Chamber of Commerce will be on the courthouse lawn this Saturday night August 7. The group is mainly school musicians with local adults. John Adams the school music instructor has led the group and will move to Omaha August 12 where he joins the Omaha public schools. Duane Johnson a University of Nebraska graduate and college band member will take over Osceola music department and move there soon.
The Iler reunion picnic took place Sunday at the Robert G. Ter home in Palmer Nebraska. Attendees traveled from Vermillion South Dakota Gothenburg Clarks and Palmer with families including L L Her and guests John L Iler and baby Ivan R Iler and E W Bonne families.
