First Sermon by Rev Underhill At Osceola Church

Rev. G. Hubert Underhill, pastor of the Methodist Church of Osceola, delivered his first sermon Sunday morning August 1. Born in Council Grove Kansas, he grew up in Hastings Nebraska and studied at Hastings College Nebraska Wesleyan University Boston University and Theological School. He married Elise Edwards Chapman on May 1 1947 and Anne Marie Underhill was born June 12 1948.

4 H Club Work in Polk County Promotes Better Citizenship

Polk County extends 4 H Club Work under the theme Creating Better Homes for a More Responsible Citizenship Tomorrow. County extension agents and 4 H leaders report rising clubs leaders and repeat enrollments. A joint program with the 4 H Junior Fair Board and local banks funds the Bankers Banquet 1948. Landscaping and remodeling of the county fairgrounds 4 H building are planned. The 4 H Parade will feature club floats and a parade committee oversees it. The Demonstration Program aims to be more varied with more teams and individuals competing.

Band Appreciation Night Set For August 13

John Adams announced Osceola schools band activities begin next week with a Band Appreciation Program at the Auditorium on Friday night August 13. The Geneva Schools band will join Mr. Adams, performing three soloist numbers as the main feature. The event is open to the public and aims to outline the year’s musical activities and instrument access information.

Anniversary Observance Marks 75 Years At Augustine Lutheran Church

The Congregational Observance of the Centennial Anniversary of Augustine Lutheran Church continues its 75th festivities with a 3 p.m. historical service on Sunday. A full schedule includes a Thursday tea and reminiscences, a Friday reunion dinner, and sermons by Dr. Oscar A. Benson and Pastor A. Leonard Smith. The week closes with Holy Communion and a retrospective address by Dr. C. O. Gulleen.

Special music will be provided at all services. Offerings include Bethphage Mission at 2 p m Thursday and Home and Foreign Missions at 8 p m, Friday 2 p m to be decided by the Confirm and Reunion, 8 p m Luther College Building Fund, Sunday 3 p m Immanuel Deaconess Institute. The Historical Exhibit may be seen in the Church Basement and Anniversary Booklets will be for sale.

Hotel Coffee Shop Reopens Under Austin Family

Mr. Tom Austin and his daughter and son in law, relatives of Stroms burg, lease the Osceola Coffee Shop and announce a Monday August 9 opening. They will run the business full time and serve regular meals three times daily with continuous hours.

Marilyn Buse stayed with Marilyn Kuehnal for a weekend. Sunday visitors included Walter Berck Mrs Harold Taddiken Mr and Mrs August Jaenicke. The Victor Sterup home welcomed Wilmer Gene Carter their wives Bob Sterup and Lois Sterup. Mrs Merle Dawes Lora Lee Perry Dawes visited Frank Deavers Rising City. The Deeters traveled west on a trip. Dick Merrick family and Alvin Merrick family hosted dinner with Leon Merrick. Bobby Merrick joined the Alvin Merrick party to Fairbury for a week.

Cattle and Hogs Reach New Top on Omaha Market

Fat cattle hit a record top of 40.50 on the Omaha market with a second load at 40.25 as improved hogs aided a Tuesday rebound. Top heifers held at 39.00 while beef cows and bulls showed varied gains and losses. Slaughter ewes and lambs posted modest advances, with several recent sales listed for Swanson and Brigham.

Shelby Couple Marks 55th Wedding Anniversary

Mr and Mrs Adolph Gabel celebrated their 55th anniversary at their north Shelby home on Sunday with family. He was born in 1860 in Austria and came to Nebraska in 1871. The couple married in 1893 and retired in 1941, living in Shelby since. They have three daughters and eight grandchildren.

Central City Tops Osceola 2-1 In Close League Clash

In a tight Cornhusker League game at Central City, the hosts edged Osceola 2 to 1 as two errors were committed. Ty Buck allowed 11 hits for Central City while Blessie yielded 7. Central City’s hits produced two runs, with D Mahoney and Nickels keying the second. Osceola scored first with a second inning run, and Central City answered in the seventh. Next up, Aurora visits on Thursday in a rain‑washed contest.

Fellers Jewelry Store Set to Open in Osceola

Osceola welcomes a new business with the opening of Fellers Jewelry Store in the Henderson Block south of the Gas Company office. The firm, previously running a similar shop in Butte Nebraska, sells watches clocks rings silverware and related items and will offer guaranteed watch and clock repairs. The Fellers have purchased Olson property a block south of the hotel and will reside in Osceola with their family.

Birth and death of Louis Oster Nicolas in Nebraska

Louis Oster Nicolas born February 2 1896 in Bellwood Nebraska. He served 15 months in World War I with the 355th Infantry 89th and married Rose Zweiner January 14 1920. He died July 25 1948 of a heart attack. Funeral and military services were at Sacred Heart Church Shelby with burial July 28 1948. He left a wife Rose two children Marilyn Rose and Leon Harold, siblings and other relatives listed.

Legion Baseball Tournament Plans Set for Osceola

The American Legion Class A tournament will be held in Osceola August 3 6 7 and 8 with eight games. Norfolk vs ONeill opens Thursday at 2 30 pm. Winners advance to the elimination tournament before the state finals as teams travel from over 100 miles receive housing and meals.

A large crowd watched the Tri city meet with teams from Columbus David City and Osceola in junior and senior swimming diving. Final scores: David City 99 Columbus 63 Osceola 52. Osceola swimmers and relays claimed multiple top finishes led by Don Byers Jim Norton Dana Bond and Dorothy Stever. A rematch is set for August 5 at David City and August 11 at Columbus.
