Federal grasshopper appropriation bolsters poisoning efforts as farmers are urged to reduce egg laying this fall. Extension entomologist urges continued use of bait to protect future corn and later alfalfa, clover, wheat, and rye seeding. Farm Bureau has distributed 458 tons this year and requests 114 more for local use. Flesh flies, a parasite of grasshoppers, are said to be declining in impact.
William McGaffin son of H M McGaffin former Polk Progress editor earns promotion to feature editor at the Associated Press London office. He graduated from State University in journalism and will sail to England with his wife on September 4.
Leonard Shepherd 19 Lyons Neb died from injuries after a CCC truck carrying 11 youths veered into a ditch Thursday. Two others, Edward Dove 18 Norton Kan and Glen Campbell 19 Rule Neb, were reported improving. Robert Nelson 17 Winnebago Neb and Walter Vincent 18 York Neb died at the scene. Investigations by the soil conservation commission and the army followed the incident.
The Methodist Church will not hold preaching Sunday as Youth Institute Sunday. Pastor attends Epworth Park Institute at Lincoln with six local youths including Logan Danskin Irma Stewart Helen Dunn Freida Buchholz Phyllis Fineey and Margaret Kennedy. Judge E E Good longtime district judge in Lincoln Nebraska and chief justice of the Nebraska Supreme Court died Wednesday morning after a period of illness. He was regarded as one of the most able justices to sit on the supreme bench.

The Soil Conservation Service with the state college of agriculture in Butler county will hold an all day soil conservation tour on August 10 starting at 9 30 a m at the Ulysses State Bank. Agricultural Agent Kelly said the event targets erosion control and soil fertility preservation helping farmers merchants and bankers. A noon dinner will be provided by the army at David City.

Maurice Elwin Knight born near Shelby Nebraska October 14 1903 died July 29 1937 at University Hospital Omaha aged 33 years 9 months 13 days. Survived by wife Faye Crawbaugh and four children parents P L Knight and spouse Gresham sister Harolds McCreary Calloway brothers Walter and Russell. Funeral at Osceola Methodist Church with Rev. Monkman and Rev. Albrecht. burial Osceola Cemetery.

The Stromsburg Community Club hosted a banquet at Scott Hall on Friday to honor the local baseball nine for their strong showing at the Nebraska Semi pro Baseball Tournament in Lincoln. A dinner followed by a brief program had Dr. R L Minnick as toastmaster and many attendees.
