Osceola Loses Muse Theatre as Curtain Falls

In Osceola the Muse Theatre closes for the season and becomes a permanent loss as the Bill Zedicher family ends local movie nights. The longtime venue, dating back to silent films and later the Rivoli, leaves the square with no immediate revival planned.

Debbie Anderson Wins Campbell Soup Label Contest

Debbie Anderson daughter of Lee Andersons and a Jeffrey Elementary sixth grader won a Campbell Soup label collection contest among two sixth grade classes taught by Dorothy Saesrud and Pauline Wieseman. She is shown with two books and a tape recorder awarded previously for collecting over 6,000 labels. this year the students earned two record players and the order has been mailed.

Rain Halts Bulldogs Triangular Track Meet

OHS boys track hosted Stroms burg Vikings and Cedar Rapids Tigers on Monday the 18th but rain shortened the meet making points unofficial. John Zelasney finished second in the 3000 meters and Lyndon Wieseman swept the long jump and shot put. Greg Cliffords and Steve Peterson took first and second in pole vault, Tim Johansen tied for third in the 100 meters, Dan Bond placed third in the 90 meter hurdles, and George Boruch was third in the 55 meter high hurdles. The 4x800 relay finished second as Murray Dunn Derald Johnson Duane Tenniges and Sam Flatt raced 9:49.1. The Bulldogs next duel with Shelby is planned for Wednesday the 27th. The Golden Rod Conference track meet is set for Saturday April 30 at Central City.

Polk County Votes to Cost Share Floodwater Structure

The Polk County Commission approves a 50 percent cost share for the Herman Dittmer floodwater retardation structure in northwest Polk County. The $19 145 88 project will be built by Bryan Construction Company of Silver Creek, continuing county district cooperation on flood control projects. The county has prior cost shares on the Coover floodwater retardation structure north of Polk.

White pickup in Osceola hits parked car then flees

Osceola police seek a white pickup with a heavily damaged front after it struck Florence Bowe’s car on Nebraska Street near Kimmel around 9 p.m. Wednesday April 20. The vehicle, traveling east then south, totaled the Bowe car and left the scene. driver remains unrecovered. Officer George Shepard notes the Bowe car was probably totaled.

Referendum Used Since 1934 For Farm Marketing Quotas

Since the 1930s ASCS has used mail referendums to decide on marketing adjustment measures. The 1938 act required two thirds farmer approval for quotas on wheat cotton rice peanuts and tobacco. Quotas apply to all producers and become effective through acreage allotments and penalties.

Johnston Escapes Serious Injury After Car Jack Accident

Steve Johnston was injured when a car jack slipped and pinned him. Neighbor Bob Lux found him about an hour and a half later, and the Osceola rescue unit transported him to Clarkson Hospital in Omaha where he spent the night in intensive care with facial cuts and back and shoulder bruises before being released home Friday evening.

Escaped prisoner dodges capture in Polk County jail break

A multi county manhunt followed the Sunday night escape of Maurice Logue from the Osceola jail. Logue, 28, jailed since February 22 for armed robbery and auto theft in York County, fled during a disturbance as officers from Osceola and nearby towns joined state patrol and county sheriffs in the search. A Simplot fertilizer truck was stolen the same evening amid the manhunt.
