A quarter section of improved Polk County land five miles southeast of Stromsburg sold at referee's sale for 140 dollars an acre. Bert L. Myers of Osceola purchased the property.
Osceola high school music students competed in the district contest held in Fullerton last Friday and Saturday. Participants and ratings include Jean Buhl piano excellent Doris Kennedy trumpet excellent Girls Sextette excellent Helen Jenn piano good.
The Legion Auxiliary sponsored the contest in local schools with winners in four classes. Senior Janet Kepner, Junior Delores Lindblade, Sophomore Merna Lee Quick, and Freshman Rosslyn Kennedy each received a $1 prize. their essays were titled Americas Contribution Toward a Permanent Peace.
Emory Turner, a Stockham track foreman, escaped unharmed when his vehicle left the highway north of the depot and climbed the bridge railing. A fire started after the collision and a fire truck was badly damaged, requiring hours to be extricated. a car failed to stop at the intersection, causing the mishap.
Gov. Val Peterson appointed Deputy Atty. Gen. H. Emerson Kokjer of Wahoo to the Fifth judicial district bench to succeed the late Judge L. S. Hastings of David City. Kokjer, 48, a 1922 Nebraska graduate, has been assistant attorney general and deputy since 1939 and 1943, respectively. He is a World War I veteran and member of several groups including the American Legion and Nebraska Bar Association. His appointment runs until the 1948 general election. He is married with two daughters.
Local society notes list visits by Harold Reed and friends from Los Angeles to Osceola. Several Sunday calls span families including Petersons Currens Joneses and the Wurtzes. Anton Wilson, Placentia mayor, spoke on Hello From Hollywood. A baby boy born Saturday to Arlo and family weighed under four pounds and required incubator care.
James C. Olson notes Arbor Day began April 10, 1872, in Nebraska with J Sterling Mortons resolution. Over a million trees were planted first year. Nebraska grew from 3% timber to a leading forestry state as Arbor Day spread nationwide and abroad. The state later adopted The Tree Planters State and the Cornhusker nickname. The founder is quoted saying Arbor Day looks to the future.
Polk County polio drive receipts total 2204.37 with 2035.57 disbursed for patient aid to April 10, 1948 and 168.80 remaining as of April 10 1947. The report notes further bills and a need to draw on the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis to pay obligations and mentions ongoing cases in Omaha and Lincoln hospitals. Leo A. A quiet ceremony Sunday at 11 30 a m united Genevieve Glatter and Roy Eberly with Father John H Howe officiating. Roy Eberly is the son of Pearl Eberly of Stromsburg. the Ghatter family hails from Shelby area before moving to a Stromsburg area farm. The couple will farm south of Stromsburg.

Members of the Wesley Chapel Club traveled to David City on Wednesday to attend a meeting with Mrs. Charles Rech. Mrs. Ross Richards assisted as hostess. Relatives and friends visited or hosted in Shelby, Omaha, Syracuse, Valentine, and Rising City as listed: the Watts, Br azee, Dawes, Zang, Huggler, and Gillett families and others enjoyed Sunday and weekend gatherings.

Louis Scow and family visited near Shelby with Jim Pickerel and daughter. Orville Enyeart attended an Eagles dinner in Columbus. Edward and John Lisko hosted visitors, with Lew Seiz of Bellwood calling near Adolph Bernt. Pinkey Hasselbalch returned from Cheyenne with his father.
The public is invited to the opening of a landing strip six miles east and one mile north of Osceola. Archer Petroleum and Bradshaw Flying Service organize aviation education with Government licensed instructors. Don Barr Norval Weers and Thomas Hulme will teach one day weekly. Bill Wearney, Archer dealer for this township, leads the event with a free ride for the oldest lady attendee.

Miss Jeanette Bullum of Lincoln married Harold Kosch of Shelby at Sacred Heart Church Shelby on Tuesday morning April 22nd. The ceremony united two families in a formal community wedding with local observers in attendance.
The Osceola Chamber of Commerce will meet Monday at 8:00 PM in the Legion Building. Local residents and events include visits from Mrs. Eva Hopkins and Mrs. Vera Samuelson, a project club meeting at Mrs. Wm. Mouden’s, and sons and daughters visiting relatives. Osceola students Lois Chantry Donna Pratt and Bob Scholz were honored at the University of Nebraska Convocation for academic achievement.
Mrs. David Nance of Kansas City and Mrs. Freda Knorr hosted and visited with several families from Lincoln Omaha Benedict Clay Center and Sutton. The long list of Sunday guests included Mr and Mrs Gerald Mentink Mr and Mrs Howell Cox and children and many Monson relatives. Individuals attended dinners lunches and family gatherings across multiple towns in Nebraska and Kansas.
Mrs. C R Peterson expresses gratitude for cards flowers and letters received during illness at St Francis and Immanuel hospitals. She notes kindnesses will not be forgotten.
