A safe at the Farmers Union Store was blown open early Saturday. Thieves escaped with about $100 in cash and checks, left $50 in the register, and triggered a clock above the safe. Sheriff action failed to yield fingerprints. motives point to hobos as potential scouts.
Mrs Morris Baker died at York hospital after pneumonia and throat infection contracted a week earlier. Born Myra Glasser in Polk in 1894 she married Morris Baker in 1922. Survived by husband two sons three daughters father Robert Glasser Polk three brothers Roy Ralph Ira and a sister Mrs Arthur Twarling.
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Leslie Carlson 91 at the Lutheran Church. She died April 11 at her daughter's home in Stromsburg. Survivors include daughter Regina and son Adolph. The column lists local visits, school events, church activities, shifts in store management, and community gatherings in Stromsburg, Swede Home, and surrounding areas with numerous names and dates.
LeRoy T. Lasse head of the Nebraska college department of speech will be installed as fourth vice president of the national council of Pi Kappa Delta at Greeley Colorado this Saturday. He returns next fall from a year’s leave and expects to complete a PhD at Iowa by June. As a member of the national forensic board he will oversee the 1938 convention contests at Topeka. Lasse is married to Irma Nuquist of this city.
The Wesley Chapel Missionary Society met with Mrs. Longacre in Shelby last Thursday. Local Osceola fathers union met at Miller showl house with reports from the district meeting. Numerous visits, dinners, and social events fill the week including anniversaries, travel from Omaha and Lincoln, and a Benefit card party hosted by Mrs. Leo Albers.
G. T. Ray lies seriously ill with a heart ailment at his home. Dr. Schroeder attends him and Miss Berniece Lind, R.N., cares for him.
Stromsburg ordinances prohibit peddling hand bills in cars and homes. Only residents may receive permits from the city clerk to hand out notices, excluding out of town peddlers. The local measure aims to keep clutter in Stromsburg and curb outsider activity.
Mr and Mrs Walter Larson and family near Clarks and Mr and Mrs William Larson visited Mrs Frank Larson and Miss Norma Carlson of Stromsburg Sunday afternoon. Several couples and guests attended birthday celebrations and church events at homes in Stromsburg and nearby communities. The T C W Club planned a meeting with Mrs Rudolph Sandine, and local families hosted visitors from Lincoln Omaha Benedict Stanton Iowa Andover Illinois Osceola and York. A newborn baby boy arrived to Mr and Mrs Bergens of Benedict on April 12 at York Lutheran Hospital.
Shelby residents welcomed multiple visitors over the week including Mrs. and Mrs. Chas E Haster returning from Los Angeles and Honolulu with family in Fort Collins. Paul LaMunyon left Shelby hospital after appendectomy recovery and Rev J W Stiverson recovering to resume duties at Seward U B Church.
County committee announces registration deadline for farmers to file farming plans with a committeeman or at the county office to receive 1937 conservation program benefits. Unfavorable crop prospects underline the value of conservation payments this year.
Howard Collins of Shelby died suddenly at a Columbus hospital after a few days illness. The direct cause was pneumonia. He was about 35, survived by his widow and three children. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Methodist Church in Shelby.
Mr and Mrs Herb Olson transferred to Stromsburg where he will become manager of the Food Center store. The Olsons have run the store since it began three years ago and will be missed. New manager Mr Paxton comes from Sargent Nebraska, with the move expected to raise his salary. The community extends a welcome to Mr Paxton.
Osceola Rotary Club is presented with its charter at a Legion Hall banquet attended by about 85 outstate members from Omaha Crete Seward Aurora York Columbus and local Rotarians. Dr E C Henry of Omaha spoke as E J Christensen of Columbus charged the club Roy Thielen of Aberdeeen SD district governor delivered the charter with Dr Ralph Schroeder giving the response and Fred Haas acting as toastmaster.
Saturday notice announces the engagement of Miss Wilmeta Steel Stromsburg daughter of Mr and Mrs W C Steel to Merle Watts Osceola. The wedding is planned for early May. Miss Steel is a Polk High School graduate and former secretary at Stanton and Stanton in Stromsburg. Watts is son of Mr and Mrs Ed Watts of Osceola, Osceola High School alumnus and Williams Embalming School graduate. They will live in Osceola where Watts works with W F Kepner and Son Furniture and Funeral.
A fire last Sunday destroyed a four room house on the Hope farm southeast of Osceola. E. R. Dillsaver was home alone and could save only a few belongings as neighbors alerted Osceola fire crews who arrived to found the home a total loss.
The University of Nebraska held its ninth annual Honors Convocation on April 20 in the University Coliseum. The event recognized students in the upper ten percent of each class with special honors for the top three percent of the senior class, featuring speaker George Fort Milton and honoring Osceola native John LeMar.
The Polk school system announced new appointments for vacancies. LaVerne Fredrickson from Osceola will teach grades 1 and 2 in Polk District 50. Ida Taylor from Wood River will teach grades 5 and 6 at Doniphan. Milton Anderson from Lyons will teach grades 7 and 8 at a rural Lyons high school. Dorothy Pearson from St. Edward will teach Normal Training and Dramatics at Stamford High School.
Maple Leaf Club met April 15 at Harriet Fisher’s home with many members and visitors. Plans were finalized for Achievement Day on April 22 at the Presbyterian Church in Osceola. Mrs. Mouden of Lincoln spoke on the Institute’s children's home life. Lunch followed. Next meeting set for Elia Wisley’s home.
Metefodist Church notes outline 10:00 Sunday School led by El ton Berck and 11:00 Morning Worship with a sermon on Christ and the World Today. 4:30 p.m. Junior and Intermediate League. Ladies Aid committee set for Friday April 23. W F M S will meet Thursday April 29 at Mrs Leon Merrick's home with Mrs V H Clark assisting.
