Polk County residents receive updates on visitors and travels to Lincoln York and Omaha. Local events include school play Pandora, church activities and a birthday party, plus notes on sales thefts gas loss and a district declamatory contest.
Word arrived Sunday of the death of Minnie Nelson at Muskegon Heights Michigan due to flu and complications. She was born Minnie Anderson July 29 1891 in Polk County and survived by husband W O Nelson and daughter Helen with multiple siblings. Her funeral followed her removal to Omaha. Eva Sophie nee Herlin Johnson born March 7 1844 in Sweden died March 28 age 79 in Omaha after long illness. She was married to Rev O A Johnson and survived by husband a son Martin Johnson of Miami and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Swede Home Lutheran Church with English and Swedish rites.
C A Olson's bring Buster Brown and his dog Tige to town for a free children’s performance at the Auditorium on Thursday afternoon April 26 at 4 o'clock. The kiddies are invited and Tige will show new tricks during the event.
Ernest E. Nyquist completed a deal this week securing the Guy Lovell property on the west part of the city. He plans to move his family there around the first of May and will make improvements in the interim.
The Lutheran church announces all evening services now begin at p.m. The pastor will give a brief report next Sunday morning about the Holdrege conference meeting held last week.
With April, Grace M. E. Church moves evening services to 7 30. Sermon topics are What hast thou in thy Hand and Behold the Dreamer Cometh. The schedule aims to attract both young and older congregants.
Relatives and friends gathered at the Mills home on Gospel Ridge to honor Mr. and Mrs. Milton A. Mills Sr. on their fiftieth wedding anniversary. The couple, married April 10 1873 in Leon Iowa, built a life in Polk County with notable public service and a large family, including seven children and eleven grandchildren.
Robert Campbell and Miss Blanche Gramlich of Lincoln visited the Campbell home Friday night. Campbell left for the Pacific coast on business Sunday morning and Gramlich returned to Lincoln by afternoon motor.
Mrs. D K Pearce went to Grand Island after learning her daughter Mrs. Kes ter Seger of Lexington was being brought to the hospital for an operation. Mrs Seger has been in grave condition since the birth of a son nine weeks ago.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Merscheim arrived from Omaha by auto Friday to spend the winter where Mr Merscheim worked in a store. He left earlier in the week for Potter to manage a farm and Mrs Merscheim will stay a week or two with her parents Mr and Mrs G Hendrickson before heading west.
The Woman's Literary Club will meet next Tuesday at two o'clock with Mrs Shew. The Alice Carpenter Circle of the Westminster Guild holds an open meeting at the Presbyterian church Saturday afternoon. Mrs John Fililman entertains at a Kensington this afternoon and also hosts the Bide a Wee club tomorrow afternoon.
Merry Workers gathered this afternoon at the Presbyterian church parlors with hostesses Mrs. E. R. Ware and Mrs. Frank Ware joining Mrs. Runge in organizing the event.
Mr. Phil Campbell entertained at ecards Saturday evening at his home. Miss Blanche Gramlich of Papillion and Mr. Robt. Campbell of Lincoln were out-of-town guests.
The Baptist Missionary Society met with Mrs. R. G. Douglas hosting and Mrs. Earl Tyler assisting. About four members and guests attended for a short program and social hour. Eastern Star held its regular meeting with Mr. and Mrs. Philip Wieseman initiated, and officers elected for the coming year include Worthy Matron Mrs. Robt. Inness and Worthy Patron Carl Frahm.
Bertha Behle and Valentine K Merlin of Valley Ranch New Mexico were married Sunday morning at the Methodist Episcopal church Santa Fe. The Rev S W Marble officiated the double wing service and the couple plan to establish their home at Valley Ranch.
Polk County Nebraska board met April 3 1923 in adjourned session with all members present. They approved various claims for road work sheriff residence upgrades and other services including salaries to officials and assistance to the poor. Various vendors and suppliers were paid for utilities coal and materials.
Postmaster W. B. Snider informed Osceola that the post office will attain second class status on July 1. An inspector visited and confirmed stamp sales topping the $8,000 annual threshold, prompting staff increases and possible future federal building consideration. The office has been run by Snider and assistant Miss Gladys Snider since February 1.
Dr. F H Oberg leads work on the new golf course north of Postmaster Snider’s home on the Snider estate. Ground is being seeded and prepared for play before the weekend. At the annual election Dr L M Shaw was re elected president with M A Mills Jr as vice president N L Nelson treasurer and F T Butz secretary. The board includes these officers with Dr F H Oberg. Greens Committee members are S A Snider F D Mills Dr F H Oberg and W S Heiltzman. Lively club interest signals a good year ahead.
John Courtney, formerly of the city, now manages Valley View Farm Dairy near Des Moines with a Guernsey tuberculin tested herd. He ships high quality dairy products daily by truck to Des Moines patrons. Uncle William Courtney remains visiting John and may not return until grass improves locally.
The Faithful Worker's Club met March 27 with Mrs. Alice Graves. Tex. members and four visitors attended. Mrs. Ella Grobe led a lesson on Pictures and Their Place in the Home. Dainty refreshments followed and the club planned to meet Mrs. Grobe on April 17. A four day millinery series began April 3 at Mrs. Mable Dornburgh's home, led by Mrs. Viola Piper with fifteen ladies present. next meeting is at Mrs. Piper's on April 12. Mervyn Heald, Northwestern University senior, posted a 94.2 average for 81 semester hours, the highest first-semester mark for a junior in the engineering school, aided by natural ability and concentration. Heald, married with a daughter, lives at 4616 Magnolia Avenue, Chicago, and works to support his studies.
The Commercial Department and the Junior Class of Osceola High School present two short plays in the auditorium on Monday evening April 16. Adults pay 25 cents and schoolchildren 15 cents. Casts total about twenty. Diogenes Looks for a Secretary and Too Much of a Good Thing are the performances.
Will Matheson and Melford Anderson returned from Omaha where they had been absent a few days on his knees Friday morning.
The Annual Polk County Sunday Schools Convention met at the Presbyterian church beginning Saturday afternoon and closing Sunday evening. Mayor Snider gave a welcome, Rev. Kimberly and Miss Margaret Ellen Brown attended, with talks on the adult Bible class and the public school Bible, plus a stereopticon lecture “Six Thousand Miles in India.” The program featured a teacher and parent perspectives on Bible in schools, strong music, and high overall quality. Officers elected include E. E. Knerr president and Mrs. George Brigham vice president, with division superintendents named. next year’s convention will be in Stromsburg.
The Commercial department at Osceola High School will stage a double bill next Monday night in the school auditorium. The plays are Too Much of a Good Thing and Diogenes Looks for a Secretary, with proceeds aiding the department treasury. The cast includes Evelyn Scholz, Keamer Scott, Everett Waite, Mildred Gilbert, Lois Fentress, and many others in order of production.
E. J. Howland starts bridge construction by unloading seven steel spans in Durant. The crew will build cement work for seven bridges over Prairie Creek this spring with about a dozen workers and two Ford trucks. The first 26 foot bridges begin one mile north and one mile west of Stromsburg.
Osceola H S and Polk H S split honors after a Friday night debate on whether Nebraska should adopt the Kansas Industrial Court system. Polk affirmatives included Naomi Pike Irma Nuquist and Andrew Nuquist while Osceola’s negative team featured Irvin Johnson Marjorie Sturdevant and Evelyn Brown. Polk listed Ruth Newman Stanley Harlest and R Carter as personnel.
J. G. Tobias of Lincoln, visiting with his sister Mrs. Wm. Runge, returned home Saturday afternoon.
