Polk County asks for bids on two graveling projects. Project one covers about four miles near Stromsburg, due by July 1. Project two covers seven miles north of Osceola, under construction, due by September 1. Roadways are 18 feet wide, funded from gasoline tax, March apportionment $1300.
Joshua Finecy, born May 5 1884 in Somerset County Pennsylvania, died April 1 1920. He served in the 183rd Pennsylvania and the 52nd Penn Infantry, later moving to Polk County Nebraska. Survived by wife Susannah Lehr and numerous children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. funeral conducted at Osceola Methodist Church with American Legion honor guard.
The Music Department of the Asceola Woman's Club staged a night of entertainment at the High School Auditorium featuring a one act play Silence Please by cast including Mrs. Oscar Anderson and Mrs. Homer Hartson. A dance, vocal solo Land of the Sky Blue Water, and Mon-Dah-Min an Ojibwa operetta by Paul Bliss followed. Mrs. Clyde Smith directed with Mrs. C G Greenwood as accompanist.
Miss Alta Bradbury daughter of Mr and Mrs George Bradbury and Mr LeRoy Hultman of Genoa were to wed this afternoon at 3 at the bride's parents home. Rev Handel Collier read the marriage lines. After a brief honeymoon the couple will live in Omaha.

Miss Charlotte Worley faced foreclosure on her mother's farm but secured a release and built a thriving agricultural career on a 3000 acre ranch near Alliance. Last year she produced 30000 bushels of certified seed potatoes earning about 864000, shipped sixteen cars of wheat for nearly 64000, and saw gains in hogs barley and alfalfa. She works long hours and guides up to thirty workers, proving persistence and Nebraska land can overcome difficulties.
Fern Waggoner of the West Side Careful Cookers won the Polk County 4-H news writing contest sponsored by the Democrat. She earned a $10 prize for club week expenses at the June roundup and was praised for superior reports. The Democrat offers another trip in 1931 for best news reports typed for the county agent’s office in 1930.
One hundred forty fathers and sons gathered last Thursday evening at the Presbyterian Church parlors for Osceola’s annual Dad and Son Banquet. The Osceola Community Club sponsored the event and the Merry Workers served a three course dinner. W. W. Norton acted as toast master, Dr Cc L LeMar spoke for the fathers, Robert Nuquist for the sons, and L C Oberlies of Lincoln gave the evening’s address to enthusiastic applause. The program included two vocal numbers by the American Legion Quartette and selections by the high school orchestra.

Funeral services for Christian Lucas were conducted at the German Lutheran Church in Columbus with interment at Columbus Cemetery. Born October 2, 1845 in Germany, he emigrated forty two years ago and leaves seven children: Mrs Joseph Wiesenmann, Mrs Albert Schulz, Mrs Henry Westmeyer, Ernest Lucas, Edward Lucas, and Emil and Hattie Lucas.

Nebraska farms gain modern conveniences as private electric plants expand. In 1929 eleven thousand five hundred eighty three private plants operated and thirty nine hundred ten farm homes were served by power lines. Electrical use spans lights, vacuum, refrigeration, running water, bath tubs, radios, telephones, and farm devices like cream separators incubators brooders and silos, signaling easier life and steadier agricultural progress.
David City Seward and Osceola will stage a triangular meet at the Polk County Fair Grounds in Osceola on Friday. Fast marks are expected with good weather as Joy leads in sprints and jumps and Rogers of Osceola is strong in hurdles and pole vault after clear 10 feet in early season.
Miss Jesse Green of the State 4-H Club office at Lincoln will meet local and prospective leaders of boys and girls in Polk County on Thursday April 17 at 2 P M in the County Agent's office. Past meetings have helped clear up questions about lessons and materials and all girls club leaders are urged to attend with questions.
The Woman's Club met Monday night at the school house with separate department sessions after the business meeting. Mrs Lindquist hosted Art and Craft. Mrs Albert Zang was elected leader and Mrs Lindquist secretary. Music division remained for spring party practice. Arbor Day lesson led by Mrs Joel Hanson. Literature department met at the school house. Drama department did not meet.
George McMeekin bought a Case Tractor in David City last week. Shelby people made hospital and family visits across Columbus and Lincoln, with several members traveling to Omaha and Caney Kansas. A barn fire occurred on the W. E. Kinney farm near town.
The Polk County Spelling Contest at Osceola drew 43 contestants from 25 districts. Fern Waggoner of District 51 won the written division, Earl Fredrickson of District 42 was second, Harriet Carlson and Margaret Olson tied for top in the oral division, and Carlson won the County Championship.

A. C. Sharritt offers early Ohio potatoes and a county Ex-Service men meeting is planned at Scotts Hall Stromsburg on Thursday April 24 with a free meal at 6 30. Attendees are invited to come and enjoy.
Gust A Peterson, longtime Osceola resident, dies after years of anemia at 75 years. Born November 19, 1854 in Merklarp Socken Sweden he came to America in 1874, married Louisa Mellgren in 1882, and lived in Galesburg Moline and Nebraska before settling on a farm near Osceola. Survived by seven children twenty grandchildren and a brother-in-law August Malgren. Funeral at 2:20 PM Friday from the Osceola residence with interment in Osceola Cemetery.
The Osceola School Board will award scholarship letters at Commencement to top students across grades. Recipients include seniors Donald Anderson through Ariene Steeple, juniors Alvin Anderson to Vera Johnson, sophomores Margaret Anderson to Edythe Johnson, and freshmen Florence Addison to Brent McBeth with varying merit percentages listed.
The Polk County Minister Association met at United Brethren Church in Shelby. They discussed a new weekday Bible teaching program for Stromsburg schools next year, delivering one hour weekly for grades 3 to 8 on Thursdays. Pupils may opt out to remain in regular classes. Reports from other towns praised the plan.
The Osceola High School Music Department presents The Lucky Jade a musical comedy directed by Ruth Miller on Thursday April 24 in the school auditorium. The story blends Virginia plantation romance with mystery and adventure spanning past and present with settings in Africa and a temple of the Lucky Jade. Cast details and synopsis will be announced next week.
